Winston-Salem, NC(April 11, 2012) — With his best career Late Model Stock Car and UARA-STARS Series finish under his belt on Saturday night, April 7th at Dillon Motor Speedway, young Dillon Bassett is ready to tame the 1-mile Rockingham Speedway this weekend.
At just 14 years-old, Dillon will be one of the youngest competitors to compete on the high banked one-mile tri-oval in Rockingham, NC as he enters the third of 16 UARA-STARS Series races this weekend. While Dillon is no stranger to the short tracks like Dillon Motor Speedway, where he finished second on Saturday night, the young driver has never been on a track as big as Rockingham.
“I’ve been there the last two or three times that Ronnie(Bassett, Jr., his brother and teammate) has raced there,” said Dillon. “The place looks a little intimidating, but for me it’s just like any other race track. We’ll go out there and practice and get used to the track and by the time we qualify and get ready to race, it’ll be just like going to Hickory or Ace.”
His second place effort at Dillon last Saturday coupled with Ronnie, Jr.’s two wins in a row to start the season has the entire Bassett Racing team riding a wave of momentum as they head into Rockingham.
“Dillon was great,” continued the young driver. “But, the way we look at it is that Dillon is over and we’ve got to be prepared for Rockingham and prepared to run up front. We have to work even harder to stay up front, going to tracks that I’ve never raced at.”
Despite his lack of experience at Rockingham, Dillon is expected to be among the challengers this weekend in the third leg of the UARA-STARS Series season. Dillon has two top tens so far this season, with a sixth at Hickory and the second place finish at Dillon and Rockingham will be his biggest challenge yet, but the young driver thinks he is up to the task.
“I’m ready to go to Rockingham,” concluded Dillon. “I don’t take for granted that we’ll be up front by no means, but I know that with Kenyon(Davidson) leading this team and all these guys working hard this week, we’ll be good there.”
