The Snowball Derby is a destination event, not only for fans, but also for drivers across a variety of disciplines.
The list of drivers to have once competed in the Super Bowl of Short Track Racing reads like a database of racing history. While numerous NASCAR champions have participated in the event, former F1, IndyCar and dirt drivers have also made starts at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
A resume in motorsports is simply incomplete without a visit to the Florida Gulf Coast.
With that in mind, there are several drivers who have yet to make a start in the Snowball Derby, or who haven’t participated in quite some time, who would add a great deal of excitement to the winter Super Late Model showdown.
Ten such drivers have been petitioned below.
2015 Snowball Derby Entry List
Jeff Burton
The Sprint Cup Series veteran and current NASCAR on NBC broadcaster has made no secret over the years that he would like to someday make a start in the Snowball Derby.
Near the end of his full-time driving career, Burton established Jeff Burton Autosport as a vehicle to propel his son, Harrison, into the spotlight and provide him a Late Model training ground to prepare for the rigors of NASCAR.
While Burton hasn’t ruled out making a start against young Harrison, he doesn’t want it to come at his expense either.
“The Late Model focus is on Harrison,” the elder Burton said. “I considered running the Snowball and he’s even pressured me to do it, but for us to be as good as we need to be, I think we need to focus on him.
“I enjoy doing things with my family and not against them. Ward and I raced against each other, and it’s hard, man. I want to be on the same team. We might race against each other a couple of times, but it won’t happen often.”
Here’s to hoping that it happens at the Snowball Derby, should that day ever come.
David Gilliland
Much like Burton above, David Gilliland has also stated a desire to run the Snowball Derby, even alongside top prospect son, Todd.
In fact, Gilliland was going to bring two Super Late Models to the Derby last season to race alongside his son, but decided against it when the team just wasn’t as good as they needed to be in the closing stages of the 2014 season.
Now David Gilliland Racing has decided to bring two cars to the Derby in 2015 — but for Todd and dirt superstar turned NASCAR hopeful Rico Abreu. While Gilliland also doesn’t want to take away from his son’s efforts, it would be darn cool to see the Sprint Cup veteran race alongside the best in short track racing and display the talent that has made him one of the most respected men in the NASCAR garage.
Lee Pulliam
The three-time and defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion is The Man in the Late Model Stock Car haven of the Carolinas and Virginias, but has very little experience in the straight-rail Super Late Models used for the Snowball Derby.
Simply put, how cool would it be to see the best Late Model Stock Car driver of this decade go head-to-head against the elite of the Super Late Model community, like Bubba Pollard, Augie Grill and Ty Majeski?
Make it happen, Lee!
Deac McCasill
Much like Pulliam above, McCaskill would bring a lot of class, excitement and energy to the Snowball Derby while also representing the Late Model Stock contingent at the Super Bowl of Super Late racing.
The 2012 NASCAR Virginia State Champion and CARS Tour contender has always enjoyed a fascination with Super Late Model racing and hasn’t shied away from his interest in the discipline. The 38-year-old said he would love to participate in the event if he could find a car and owner interested in having him come on board.
“It seems like a lot of fun,” McCaskill said. “We watched it last year on (51TV) and that track seems like a tough place to get around. They draw a lot of fans and it seems like they’ve done a good job of making it into a big deal.
“I’d definitely give it a shot if it made sense.”
Paging all Super Late Model car owners …
Tommy Lemons Jr.
The same things written about Lee Pulliam and Deac McCaskill above certainly apply to the two-time and defending Martinsville Late Model Stock Car event winner as well.
The fiery and passionate Lemons would be a great fit alongside the power brokers of Super Late Model racing for a week in Pensacola. Just imagine Lemons taking the likes of Pollard, Casey Smith or Daniel Hemric side-by-side.
Those storylines speak for themselves …
Alex Tagliani
Most known for a lengthy and successful career in the Champ Car World Series and the Verizon IndyCar Series, Tagliani has a deep appreciation for short track racing and owns his own team in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
In fact, the popular 42-year-old finally won his first NASCAR oval event in June when he went to Victory Lane at Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario. Having made a handful of road course starts in the Camping World Trucks and XFINITY Series, Tags has even said he would like to compete in more oval events.
The epitome of fun and class in open-wheel competition, Tagliani would be a great fit for a future Snowball Derby.
Mason Mitchell
Even though the 2014 ARCA Racing Series Champion has previously competed at Five Flags Speedway in a Pro Late Model, Mason Mitchell has yet to make a start in a Super on the biggest stage in short track competition.
Mitchell is one of the most underrated prospects in Stock Car racing and would surely benefit from a good showing in the Snowball Derby. His outgoing and exuberant personality would also be a great fit for an event built on great racing and memorable characters.
Fun fact: When Mitchell made his most recent Snowflake 100 attempt in 2011, there was actually another Mason Mitchell (from Texas) on the entry list. That made for quite the confusing and complicated weekend.
Brian Keselowski
Keselowski makes this list because he’s one heck of a driver AND for the hard time he gives fans of Super Late Model racing for the car’s lack of horsepower.
“What’s so super about a 500hp car?”
Once he gets over the lack of power, Keselowski would be a fun and candid addition an event built on powerful personalities. From a storytelling perspective, it’s hard to not get excited about a bonafide presidential candidate potentially competing in the Snowball Derby.
(Yeah, he’s actually running)
Meanwhile, get your hands on a straight-rail chassis and the stars of the Snowball Derby will show you what it means to be super, BK!
Frank Kimmel
Frank Kimmel is synonymous with Midwestern short track lore and is a legend to those who love the discipline.
The 10-time ARCA Racing Series champion has dominated the Indiana-based touring series for over two decades but has yet to come down south to compete in the Snowball Derby. In cutting back to a partial schedule in 2015, Kimmel said he expected to race on short and dirt tracks for many years to come.
Meanwhile, at least one of those starts should come in December at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. It would be a dream come true for those who grew up watching Kimmel dominate Salem, Winchester and Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana.
Ken Schrader
Mr. Schrader actually has one prior start in the Snowball Derby, finishing fourth in the 1994 running. With that said, there are those within the industry that would like to see him to make a comeback to asphalt Late Models.
In a Twitter conversation, Bubba Pollard said he would sincerely enter a car for Schrader should the dirt veteran and former Sprint Cup driver ever show an interest in migrating south for the winter. When told of the proposition, Schrader essentially said, thanks but no thanks.
“I’ve raced the Snowball Derby before and had a lot of fun doing but there just wasn’t enough racing for my liking,” Schrader said. “Look, you spend all week there and you only race once on Sunday. If I’m going to spend a week somewhere, I want to race a lot more than once.
Well, Kenny, you could always get your hands on a Pro Late Model, Pro Truck, Southern Modified, Sportsman and Bomber. We’re pretty sure there would be no shortage of car owners willing to help you out!
Just saying. 😉
