South Boston Speedway’s final race of the season Saturday night will be everything a season-finale should be: exciting and significant.
Let’s see what’s on the line: a five-way point battle headed into the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race; the South Boston NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model stock track championship battle between leader Matt Bowling and Lee Pulliam will be decided in twin 75-lap races; and Pulliam will have a shot at clinching his third NWAAS national championship.
Yep, it’s exactly what you would expect on the final race night of the season at America’s Hometown Track.
The first race is scheduled for 7 p.m. Gates open at 3:30 and there will be an on-track autograph session at 6 p.m.
The NWSMT will be making its second stop of the season at South Boston and with just three races remaining in the season the series’ point chase is remarkably close, just nine points separating the top five drivers.
Jason Myers leads the race with 308 points. His brother Burt and Andy Seuss are tied for second at 307, followed by Kyle Ebersole (303) and George Brunnhoelzl III (299) is fifth.
Neither of the Myers brothers have a South Boston win while Seuss has a pair and Brunnhoelzl and Ebersole have one each.
Bowling and Pulliam have both been engaged in extraordinary seasons. Bowling leads Pulliam by 30 points in the South Boston LMS standings. Pulliam has nine wins at South Boston in the season; Bowling four. Bowling has been more consistent, avoiding any really bad finishes. Pulliam had two last-place efforts the same night in the middle of the summer, which had him playing catch-up the rest of the season.
While Bowling is in good position to claim his second South Boston track championship by age 21, Pulliam is poised to nail down a third NWAAS national title. He has a 19-point lead in the national battle going into the weekend.
Practice is set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on September 19. The first Modified practice is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 4 p.m. The first of the night’s three races will get the green flag at 7 p.m.
Advance tickets are on sale for $10 each, with advance tickets being available until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 18. Adult general admission tickets on race day will be priced at $15. Youth ages 7-12 will be admitted for $5 each with a paying adult. Kids six years of age and under will be admitted free with a paying adult.
