FLORENCE, SC :: While Ross Kenseth was dodging rain drops on Saturday night at the Historic South Boston Speedway in Virginia, father Matt Kenseth was making his way to the lead and his first victory at another historic race track, the Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.
With both drivers picking up wins on the same night, it got me wondering has anything like this ever happened? I did some research and I haven’t been able to find anything yet of a father and son winning a touring series race and a Sprint Cup Series race on the same day, matter of fact, within the same hour. So tip of the hat to the Kenseth family.
Matt wasn’t shy on showing emotion on Saturday night either. The normally tame driver was all smiles and cutting jokes in victory lane and would later say winning at Darlington is probably his biggest win ever. That includes winning a Sprint Cup Series championship as well as two Daytona 500’s.
“There’s just a lot of reason. Just to win the Southern 500, obviously it’s a little different since they moved it from Labor Day. To me it still has the same meaning.” Said Kenseth after his third victory of the season.
“This is a really historic racetrack, the Southern 500 is one of the most storied and historic races anywhere, not just in NASCAR.” It’s pretty cool to stand in Victory Lane at this place.” Kenseth continued.
Just up the road, four hours away from where his father was racing, Ross Kenseth would make a charge through the field, taking the lead late in the running of the PASS South 150 at South Boston. Ross would win a rained shortened event; his second victory of it’s kind on the PASS tour. Kenseth also won the All-American 400 at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville last October.
“About lap 40, guys started going real hard, I knew when Kyle and Preston were getting after it I had to get going. I thought I was going to burn it up way too early about lap 80 or 90 there.” Said Ross following the victory.
For Matt, the victory at Darlington marked his third win of the season while Ross picked up his first victory on the Pro All Stars Series South tour.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend for the Sprint All-Star race while the PASS South Series takes the week off before returning to the Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina.
