As we approach the latter end to Late Model racing at short tracks across the region, series points championships are taking shape and a good one going on is at Langley Speedway.
Currently leading the series points is Danny Edwards Jr who without question is the hottest driver around on the .395 mile race facility. Winner of the last four point races, starting on the pole on both those nights, the only thing to slow down the five time Langley Late Model track champion recently was the big race of the Hampton Heat 200.
Looking to rebound after a disappointing alternator failure just two weeks ago was Greg Edwards who has seen his once fifteen series points lead back in mid July turn into a ten point advantage for Danny Edwards Jr. Between wrecks, flat tires and working out the bugs of a rebuilt race car, getting back to Victory Lane has been a challenge for Greg Edwards. Mathematically, sitting third in points and refusing to go away is Brenden Queen, still could become a factor should either of the Edwards brothers have misfortunes.
Race action started the day by deciding the sixteen car field in qualifying time trials, two competitors did not take time. Back on pole once again was Danny Edwards Jr whose fast lap at 15.957 sec or 89.114 mph was better then Greg Edwards by just twenty five thousandths to earn Danny yet another pole. After making his first ever K&N East Series start, Tyler Hughes qualified third while to his outside was Brenden Queen. Mark Wertz with a solid lap nabbed the five spot while Connor Hall, Casey Wyatt, Dean Shiflett, Clayton Parrish and Cody Carlton completed the ten best on the grid.
Green flag racing began right at dusk and pole winner Danny Edwards Jr would lead a good field of racers into turn one. Before we could get things settled, trouble up front for two of the leaders as Tyler Hughes and Brenden Queen madecontact. Hughes faired better of the deal but for Queen, his spin brought out the caution and would have to start at the tail end of the field.
Back to green and emerging with the lead outta turn two was Danny Edwards Jr with Greg Edwards and Tyler Hughes battling for second. Several laps later, Hughes would find himself losing positions also to Mark Wertz who showed muscle in the early beginning of the race. Our second caution flag waved as Craig Eastep went into the turn three wall ending his hopes of a good finish.
After a brief clean up, we went back to green flag racing and once again, Danny Edwards Jr was on point. Wertz would harass Greg Edwards a bit for second before settling into third but on back is where the show was. Connor Hall, Casey Wyatt began their march into the ranks of the top five before the third caution waved for JT Jacksons spin.
That caution setup a lap 36 restart where Danny Edwards Jr is once again the leader out of turn two. This time breaking the five best crowd was Brenden Queen who regrouped after an earlier spin. The race would see one more caution on lap forty nine but neither the caution or anyone on the track was denying Danny Edwards Jr of the win as he crosses the stripe first. Greg Edwards, Mark Wertz, Casey Wyatt and Brenden Queen were the race’s five best.
The finishing order of the first feature would serve as the starting grid to our second giving Danny Edwards Jr yet another race pole. Marking this point now is five straight wins for Danny Edwards Jr and bearing the question. Is there anybody right now capable of knocking off Danny of his dominance at Langley Speedway? Though the question is rather simple, winning races is not though for some seemingly so.
If you been around long enough in racing, anything can happen. Green flag waves for yet another sixty five lap feature and being stingy once again is Danny Edwards Jr who clears and is on point to show the way. On back, Greg Edwards gives chase followed by a good battle for third between Wertz and Wyatt before Wertz getting the upper hand. Back up front, Greg Edwards would run down the leader even poking a fender underneath sizing up the leader for a pass. Then on lap eleven of the race saw our first lead change of the night as Greg Edwards would take the lead.
After a brief battle, Connor Hall returned to the top five getting around Casey Wyatt, otherwise a very tame beginning to the race considering the first one. Just past halfway and firmly in control was Greg Edwards before the races first caution flag waved for the spinning ride of Bruce Livingston. Back to the green and taking the cone was Tyler Hughes who wanted him some of the race leader Greg Edwards. But it was some of Greg Edwards was all he got as it wasn’t long before Hughes had to settle in for second. The races second and final caution came on lap forty for a spin involving Macy Causey but the caution would be brief. Lining up again to the outside of Greg Edwards would be Tyler Hughes looking to fair better then last time. Green flag again and by turn one Greg Edwards secured the lead leaving Hughes to settle second with brother Danny. Connor Hall continued to make moves showing fourth at this point along with Brenden Queen in the top five.
Several laps into the green flag run saw Danny Edwards run down the leader but a car length was the best he could do before Greg Edwards began to pull away again. Connor Hall in a very impressive run would slip into third but after being absent from Victory Lane since May 30th of this year, Greg Edwards would go on to win the second feature at Langley Speedway. Danny Edwards Jr, Connor Hall, Tyler Hughes and Brenden Queen would round out the five best. T
he Langley Speedway Late Model points championship season will have to be decided in its season finale Sept 19th where one race of 125 laps will do it. Greg Edwards neither lost nor gained points on current leader Danny Edwards Jr. Pending misfortunes, car counts and opportunity, its not over just yet in the late Model division at Langley Speedway.
