NEWTON, NC :: Dillon Bassett brought his brooms with him to two North Carolina tracks over the weekend, performing a clean sweep on the weekend. Bassett scored victories at Caraway Speedway and Hickory Motor Speedway to improve his win total on the 2014 season to 12.
“This weekend wasn’t too bad,” Bassett said. “It’s hard to run four races and win four races.”
Bassett’s victories at both tracks came in twin races. On Friday night, Bassett held off two-time defending NASCAR Whelen All –American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam twice to score two victories at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina. He won the first race from the third starting position and won the second race from the seventh starting position.
“The car was really, really good at Caraway,” Bassett remarked. “The second race, we started seventh and got to the front really quick. I think Lee started behind me and followed me both races so I made all the holes for him.”
Bassett traveled west on Saturday, heading to Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, North Carolina. Once again, he brought him broom with him. Bassett raced to the lead, and the win, in both races from outside the top-10, making moves that defy racing logic in getting there.
“I think between the two races, I went three wide three or four times. When you’ve got to go for the lead in a short amount of time, you have to do what you have to do. There’s an opening and you have to take it. It’s all about taking chances.”
Bassett is no stranger to traveling to new tracks and winning races. In 2013, Bassett scored three late season wins en route to the UARA touring series championship. This season, Bassett has continued with that surge of momentum. He now has 12 wins acros four different tracks (Caraway, East Carolina, Hickory and Motor Mile) to his credit. He’s also competed at Southern National Motorsports Park and Langley Speedway and was a contender to win at both tracks.
“We’ve been in contention every time we’ve shown up at a racetrack,” Bassett stated.
Bassett was leading at Southern National before Matt McCall used a little muscle to get by him to score the victory. At Langley, Bassett was in contention late in the Hampton Heat 200 and ended that race with a top-10 finish after running inside the top-three most of the race.
Bassett will compete in the Bobby Isaac Memorial at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday and at Caraway Speedway on Labor Day. He says his plans following the regular season are to compete in the MDCU 300 at Martinsville Speedway, where he has some unfinished business, as well as the Myrtle Beach 400 and the Thanksgiving All-Star Classic at Southern National.
