For Cole Timm, this weekend is a chance to end the Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) Super Late Model Tour season in the same place he started it – victory lane.

Timm, hailing from Mooresville, North Carolina and just a week away from celebrating his 17th birthday, won the series’ inaugural event at Southern National Motorsports Park. As a result, he took the CARS Super Late Model Tour points lead.

Seven months later, Timm still holds that point lead entering the last race of the ten-race campaign, which will be held this Saturday at Hickory Motor Speedway. With a nine-point advantage over Kyle Grissom, Timm hopes he can come out on top of the tight championship battle.

“It’s really going to be close. Each one of us has had our ups and downs,” said Timm about the title hunt. “It’ll come down to within a few points of each other, whether it’s him or me. We’ve both had very good years, we can’t hang our heads on anything.”

Coming away with the championship would be a pivotal moment in the young driver’s career. Not only would he become the first driver to win a CARS Super Late Model Tour championship, it would also mark Timm’s first championship in a Super Late Model.

“It would mean a lot to me. It would be my first Super Late Model Championship,” Timm said. “Just being able to say we beat the cars we beat this year, the guys that are in the points. It’s a big deal, not just for me but everyone that’s worked on my car this year and all our sponsors.”

Timm noted the level of competition throughout the season in the CARS Tour has been one of its greatest draws.

“A lot of series that have started haven’t had this much publicity and haven’t had these car counts,” Timm said. To these guys, when they pull 60-plus cars, it’s a big deal. It’s obvious that they know what they’re doing.”

That will be especially true this weekend, thanks to the Double Duty Dare lined up by the series. Several drivers will be running both the Late Model Stock and Super Late Model features at Hickory this weekend, for a total of 300 laps of racing. If a driver can win both races, he will net a $40,000 bonus on top of his regular winnings.

Timm acknowledges that the extra competitors could add an extra wrinkle to this weekend’s championship fight, but is thankful the Super Late Model race will be second in the program this weekend.

“We’re the last race, so only one person will have a chance to win both races,” Timm noted. “I think it will impact both races. The first race, all those guys will be going for the win. With those guys going for the win, something could happen to the points guys.”

“We’re not going to worry about it. We want to win the race, but we’ll just run it like another race and do the best we can.”
