RALEIGH, NC :: Clay Jones has scored six consecutive wins at Wake County Speedway and has 12 wins on the season. A bounty was placed on Jones at the beginning of August but that hasn’t slowed him down at all and Jones hops to keep going with his winning ways.
After the bounty was announced, Jones went on to sweep twin Late Model features at Wake County on August 8th. The following race, this past Saturday, Jones added another trophy to his collection, extending his win streak to six at the quarter-mile bullring in Raleigh.
“To be honest, I didn’t think this was possible,” Jones said. “I’ve always believed in my guys and they believe in me, we’ve had tough times and been up and down but I think everyone’s clicking right now. I can tell them what the car’s doing and they can get it spot on every time. It’s fun to run when you have a fast car. This is more than I expected, especially six in a row, it’s unbelievable.”
Jones said he has had a blast in the last two seasons of racing, which he calls the most successful in his career. Last season, Jones won the Southeast Limited Late Model Series Championship and the track championship in the Southern National Motorsports Park Limited Late Model division. This year, he’s continued his winning ways at Wake County and at Dillon Motor Speedway, where he’s collected two of his wins, just ‘South of the Border’ in South Carolina.
“It’s been a heck of a ride,” Jones remarked. “The last year and this year have been my most successful two years of my career. We came up with two championships last year at Southern National and in the Southeast Limited Series. We’ve kept the ball rolling this year. I’ve got the best group of guys anyone can ask for. They work their butts off, they’re smart and that’s what it takes, good people who believe in you. As long as you have good communication and have a good time. If you’re not having fun and having a good time, you won’t run too well. They put an awesome car under me week in and week out. It’s amazing to work with those guys.”
Jones plans to finish out the season at Wake County Speedway, where he has amassed a 260 point advantage over Cory Walker in the track’s championship standings. Jones did say he’d like to run at Martinsville.
“I wish we could run Martinsville. We watch every year but it costs so much. We have two races left at the County and after that, we’ll go elsewhere, venture to other places and try different things.”
One of those different things could be this weekend’s Super Late Model race at Wake County, though Jones says he’s not decided whether he’d race in that.
For now, Jones, who is supported by Pro Cup Powerdercoating, Accelerated Designs, Harold’s Racing Engines and TORP Racing Chasis, is looking forward to winning more races and continuing to fend off a bounty that’s been put on him by Wake County Speedway promoter Adam Resnick. That bounty is likely to be increased to $1,000 for the September 5th race at Wake County Speedway.
