MYRTLE BEACH, SC :: Anthony Anders kept the momentum going on Friday night with a victory in the rescheduled $10,000 to win Myrtle Beach 400. Anders started in 26th position after having to take a provisional to get in to the race but drove his way to the front of the field. Anders inherited the win when the two race leaders made contact on the white flag lap. The race leader was penalized to the end of the lead lap for rough driving and NASCAR awarded Anders the victory.
“We made a few changes to the car,” said Anders. “We talked about it. I said I was going to do a little bit on the staggered tires and that’s what we did. We put just a little bit of soft spring rubber on the left front and it rotated a lot better. I hated to see those cautions come out toward the end. We were going to put on a good show there especially in the last eight laps but that caution came out. We freed it up to the point it just turned right down on the bottom, good throttle response and we just came right on home.”
Anders used a combination of a fast car and tire/car management to make his way through the field. By the halfway point of the 250-lap race, Anders had worked his way to the eighth position. From there, he picked off the leaders one at a time and exchanged the lead with other competitors several times.
“We were backing up,” said Anders. “We set a pace a little back. I had my spotter telling me what they were running and we were trying to back up to them. We were back and forth about times and I felt like, the slower I got, the better my car got. We learned a few things. At the end, there wasn’t time to think about saving anything we had. We were really putting on a show. I got in the wall a couple times off two with eight or nine to go. It was so much fun, just unbelievable. I’m sure we put a show on for everybody.”
Anders’ win at the Myrtle Beach 400 follows a weekend sweep last weekend where Anders won twice at Kingsport Speedway in Tennessee and at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina.
“This is a blessing to have four wins at three different racetracks,” explained Anders. “I don’t know how to absorb all this and how to approach going to other places like this. What a racecar. Having to take a provisional to make the field last year and winning it this year, is that not a blessing?”
Anders will compete again at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday night, March 23rd in the 150 lap Spring Challenge at the Beach.
