CHARLOTTE, NC :: New Mexico native Devon Amos, 22, is ready for the challenge of Late Model Stock Car competition. Amos was selected to compete for Rev Racing in 2014 through the NASCAR Drive for Diversity and will compete at Hickory Motor Speedway as well as in select races at Langley Speedway and Motor Mile Speedway.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity,” Amos said. “I’ve been working really hard just to get to this point. To be honest, I feel like a dog chasing a car and don’t know what to do when I’ve caught it. Now I’ve caught it and don’t know what to do other than be grateful. I’m just so excited.”
Amos’ main goals are to learn and keep the cars in one piece early on and then compete for top-five finishes later on in the season.
“I want to learn and keep the cars in one piece,” Amos explained. “I believe in the guys that are working over here. I worked in the Late Model shop last year. I’m excited to work on the chemistry and communication. I don’t have any other expectations. Hopefully, we’ll rattle off some top-10s and top-fives and maybe some wins. It just depends.”
Amos competed in the Summer Shootout Series for Rev Racing in 2013. Before that, he competed in Quarter Midgets, Mini Sprints and Four-Cylinders.
“My first interest in racing came with a cartoon show called NASCAR Racers,” Amos stated. “That stuff was so awesome for me. I was nine at the time. Then, when I turned 12, my parents got me a quarter midget and we took off from there. We didn’t race those too long, just a handful of races and then took a break. When I was 15, we were racing in a four-cylinder class. I raced those for a half-season. I never did a complete season when I got my own job and bought my own car and had to pay for everything. I took my career more serious. I raced Mini Sprint for three years, won the championship in New Mexico. I ran the Legends cars last year and a couple Late Model races as well.”
Amos will compete in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series alongside 20-year-old Paige Decker from Wisconsin. Both drivers were selected as part of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program after a combine was held at Langley Speedway. Daniel Suárez, Ryan Gifford, Jay Beasley and Sergio Peña were also selected to compete for Rev Racing’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series teams.
