LUCAMA, NC – Cole Bruce rebounded from a mid-race incident in the Limited Late Model preliminary at the Thanksgiving Classic at Southern Motorsports Park on Sunday afternoon.
The 14-year-old from Fredericksburg, Virginia qualified in the fourth position with a 16.067 second lap around the 4/10-mile track. He raced his way up to third in the opening laps of the 75 lap race, but he got stuck on the outside line and fell back to seventh before going around on lap 40 and falling to the rear of the field. After the incident, he raced his way back up to the seventh position.
“Spotter told me I was clear in a tight fit,” Bruce said. “I was just trying to protect the bottom and it kind of hurt us there. Just trying to stay on the lead lap, keep our pace up and keep up with the leaders.”
While Bruce was able to get back up to seventh, the finish was not the result he was looking for.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the finish we wanted but we got the seat time we needed,” Bruce remarked. “The car was great, and we probably deserved a top-five finish but we’ll take what we can get. Hopefully, next year when we go down there, we’ll have a good racecar to race with.”
The race at Southern National was Bruce’s final race of the 2018 season. Next year, he will race in Limited Late Models at South Boston Speedway, Southern National Motorsports Park, Dominion Raceway and possibly Carteret County Speedway.
