HAMPTON, VA :: The Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown will have a new home in 2016 as the annual race moves to Langley Speedway for the first time in it’s storied history.
Langley Speedway officials announced today that the 2016 Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown will move to the flat Hampton Roads area track. The race will be held on Thursday, April 21st.
In an interview with the Daily Press, Buck Reuss who is the coordinator for the race event and the pit road announcer for Langley Speedway expressed his excitement with the new venue for the event.
“It’s Langley’s turn,” said Reuss. “I’ve been saying for years that the race should come to Langley. Langley is where Denny Hamlin won the 1997 Mini-Stock championship and raced Grand Stocks in 1998. This gives the fans in Hampton Roads a chance to see it and businesses all the way to Virginia Beach a chance to contribute to charities supported by the Denny Hamlin Foundation.”
Track promoter Chuck Hall was also excited about the race coming to Langley Speedway.
“I think it will definitely be a standing-room-only sellout, the latest crown jewel at Langley Speedway,” track promoter/general manager Chuck Hall said. “When you consider the history at Langley, with the Cup level races in the 1960s and the drivers like Denny Hamlin it has produced, it is fitting that this track will host the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown.
“Our commitment to NASCAR under Bill Mullis, two Southern Modified races and the K&N Pro Series East race each year is strong, so it’s great to add a piece to that legacy.”
