For the first time in four seasons, the CARS Tour will make its return to Motor Mile Speedway located just outside of Radford, Virginia. The track played host to the first ever CARS Tour race in the state of Virginia back in 2015.
Just like the previous event in the tour’s inaugural season, both Late Model Stock Cars and Super Late Models will battle around the 4/10th-mile track. Unlike a majority of the tracks in the region, Motor Mile is a high grip, fast track facility. Teams who can get the most power to the rear tires are the teams that will be toward the front of the pack in the closing laps. Because of its characteristics, it is a popular track amongst drivers, leading to large car counts in both divisions.

Matt Craig Like Many Has Love for Motor Mile
If you look back at the results of the Super Late Model race from the tour’s last visit to Motor Mile, one would have to scroll down to the 11th place finisher to find a name that is on this weekend’s entry list that competed in the 2015 race. That 11th place finisher was then sixteen years old Matt Craig. Now a twenty-year-old student at UNC-Charlotte, Craig is much older and much more mature behind the wheel of his #54 Super Late Model. Despite being a long period of time between races at Motor Mile, Craig still feels the same excitement to be returning to the track four years later.
“Motor Mile is a super nice place and the track is awesome with lots of grip for these Super Late Model. There aren’t a whole lot of tracks we go to around here that have that. I’m excited to be going back there because I know I’ve gotten a lot better as a driver since the last time I was there, and have learned so much since then. Lemons Hopes to Steal Spotlight in Motor Mile
Tommy Lemons Jr was involved in the closest finish in Late Model Stock history at Motor Mile Speedway, edging Peyton Sellers in a dead heat back in 2014. That weekly show finish took multiple days to declare Lemons the winner. Now as the tour returns to the same track this weekend, Lemons is hoping to once again be in the spotlight at Motor Mile.
“I think like a lot of us this weekend, we are looking forward to getting back to Motor Mile Speedway. I’ve had some good success over the years and been involved in some pretty wild finishes there. Even the last time we were there with the CARS Tour in ’15 we had a good car and ran up front, but unfortunately, our night ended early and didn’t get the finish we could have. Fast Forwarding from Four Years Ago
Four years ago the CARS Tour visited Motor Mile Speedway in its inaugural 2015 season. Josh Berry claimed his first ever CARS Tour victory in the Late Model Stock division. Zane Smith, now driving in the Xfinity Series, outlasted current NASCAR Cup star William Byron in a green-white-checkered finish to get his lone CARS Super Late Model Tour victory. An excellent night of racing wasn’t seen by many in the stands. Fast forward to this weekend’s scheduled Heritage Truck Centers 250, anticipation is high for another quality field of racecars and a large crowd to see all the action in person. According to CARS Tour series owner, that is the key to future events at Motor Mile, and the immediate future looks bright.
“It feels good to be going back to Motor Mile, this weekend. Without question, it is one of the nicest facilities around, and with the return of stock car racing in the area, I feel like there are a lot of good things happening at the track. For us, the crowd support had been a struggle in the past, and with our business model, we rely on support from the fans to make our program work. But, after seeing the crowd the track had on opening night, and the momentum we’ve built over the last four years, I think we should have an excellent event Saturday night.
