Joey Throckmorton came into the 2016 season at South Boston Speedway as the odds on favorite to win the Limited Late Model championship and on opening day he proved that he was ready to live up to expectations.
Throckmorton qualified on the pole and dominated the 50-lap race. His only challenge came from restarts from whoever would line up beside him. From the drop of the green flag Throckmorton held the top spot but the caution would fly right away as Colin Garrett who qualified third went for a spin collecting Brandon Jones, Mike Chambers, Bob Davis and Billy Myers.
Mason Diaz, son of Southern National Motorsports Park owner Mike Diaz qualified second but fell back to fourth from the restart on lap one as Calvin Meadows and Mike Jones moved to second and third respectively. On lap 10 Daniel Moss would spin out bringing the field to a slow roll once again. Lap 27 would see another caution as Throckmorton had a commanding lead once again.
Meadows would spin while racing with Diaz for the second position to bring out a lap 42 caution. With just eight laps to go no one seemed to have anything for Throckmorton who’s lead every lap. Throckmorton would pick up the win over Diaz at the finish. Former PASS Series racer David Latour, Jr. made his way up to third after starting in 12th position as Tommy Peregoy finished fourth with Daniel Moss recovering from his spin to finish fifth.
