Joey Throckmorton collected his sixth Limited Late Model series win of 2016 last Saturday night at South Boston Speedway safeguarding his win streak and the track bounty that has been placed against him. But in the second Limited Late Model feature, Mike Jones benefitted from a four car inversion en route to his first win of the 2016 race season. Race action in the Limited series began with the afternoon time trials as Joey Throckmorton collected his fourth pole of the year. His lap of 16.322 sec or 88.224 mph around the 4/10’s mile oval was better by just twenty eight thousandths of a second over David Latour Jr’s lap time which guaranteed a share of the front row. Mike Jones, Daniel Moss and Tommy Peregoy made up the five best of the ten car field.

Green flag waved and from there, the assault of Joey Throckmorton began. Mike Jones would keep the leader easily in his sights but never could mount a charge in the early part of the race. Meanwhile, David Latour Jr, Daniel Moss and Tommy Peregoy would all keep it close together in their group for position but the leaders were steadily getting away. Halfway through the feature and leader Throckmorton encounters slower race traffic. Jones would make the best of things but didn’t yield the results he was needing as Throckmorton extended his race lead to six length’s. Then on lap nineteen of the scheduled twenty five lap race, a competition caution was ordered from the officials.

Rule at South Boston Speedway that if the race goes 75% caution free that a mandatory competition caution would be thrown and was just the break Mike Jones needed. Back to green flag racing and Throckmorton made quick work Jones to secure the race lead. In the wake, Latour Jr mounted a valiant effort to try and take the second spot for Jones but couldn’t make it work. As for the race leader Joey Throckmorton, he would cruise on to victory for his sixth consecutive win and forcing South Boston Speedway to add another hundred dollars to his bounty.

In the second twenty five lap race feature, a four car inversion was added to the race forcing earlier race winner Joey Throckmorton to start fourth on the grid. That gave second place finisher Mike Jones the pole for the race. Green flag racing was on the speedway as all ten Limited Late Models speed off into turn one. By turn two, Mike Jones secured the point followed by David Latour Jr giving chase. Peregoy, Throckmorton and Moss after a brief battle for position finally all went single file to make up the early top five. Just four circuits in and the race experiences its first caution as Barry Beggarly Jr goes around. One lap later the race was back under caution and to everyone’s surprise, Throckmorton has troubles and would have to start in the rear of the field.

Back at it again, race leader Mike Jones takes the green flag, great battles up front for position but leads to the third caution as Peregoy and Moss are both involved. Nearing halfway, there would be one more caution period to the race before Mike Jones would take the checkered flag in a cautioned filled race event. Jones who had to withstand several restarts lead all twenty five laps to nab up his first win of the season. He also collected the bounty as part of his race winnings. Barry Beggarly Jr rebounded from a earlier spin finishing second, Joey Throckmorton also rebounded to finish third. Limited Late Model racing at South Boston Speedway will take a month off with its next event slated for June 15th. A scheduled 50 lap race event awaits when the Limited Late Models see action once again.

After post race inspection, South Boston Speedway officials determined that race winner in the second Limited feature Mike Jones and Barry Beggarly Jr were DQed for illegal camshaft. Because there were twin events, both drivers will be DQed from both races as shown in the final finishing order. Joey Throckmorton will be credited with the race win in feature race number two.
