Myrtle Beach, SC(July 4th, 2012) – Sam Yarborough picked up the win on Tuesday night in the second of five one hundred lap Late Model races at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. Yarborough would have to battle with 2011 Late Model Stock track champion Justin Milliken to pick up his second win in a row.
Justin Milliken would lead the field to green after claiming the top spot in qualifying with a time of 20.994 second. Jeremy McDowell would start second followed by Yarbrough, Matt Cox and Jamey Lee rounding out the top five.
As with any racing longer than fifty laps at Myrtle Beach, tires are a big factor in who will see the checkered flag first. So it wasn’t uncommon to see pole sitter Justin Milliken drop like a rock in the opening laps of the event. Milliken would fall to eight position within ten laps.
Jeremy McDowell would experience problems earlier on and bring his car to the attention of his crew. Something was amiss on his machine, but his crew would find the problem and get him back out to make laps, but his shot at winning would be over before lap ten.
A big accident on lap thirty three would see some of the top running guys exit earlier from the event. Matt Cox along with 2010 track champion Brent Brinson and Jamie Weatherford would all get collected in an accident in turn three when oil from the Anthony Anders machine would make its way on the track. All were done for the night.
Under the red flag for the accident in turn three, Anders would be directed to pit road by track officials and looked to be done for the evening. That wasn’t the case as several minutes later, Anders climbed back into this car and returned to action a lap down.
With the help of a caution on lap seventy, Anders would return to the lead lap, but would have a long way to go to get a good finish. With the help of a caution with five to go, Anders would rebound to second and score valuable points in his quest to win the National Championship.
A solid green flag run would follow the red flag and see several guys battle for the top spot. Jamey Lee, Yarborough and Justin Milliken would all battle for the top spot with Milliken eventually taking the position. Milliken would lose the top spot with eleven laps to go when Sam Yarborough would make his move into turn one and take the position.
Even with a caution on lap ninety five, nobody could touch Sam Yarborough as he would cruise to his second consecutive win and lock himself into the Myrtle Beach 400 in November.
Milliken, who was battle for the lead with ten to go would fall back to fifth after a restart would see Anders get by for second. Jamey Lee would come home third, and veteran Super Truck racer Stuart Ricks would come home fourth.
The next one hundred lap event for the Late Models will be Thursday, August 2nd.
