Hudson, NC(May 1, 2009) — David Wilson of Sarasota, FL pulled off a Brad Keselowski style upset in Friday nights Late Model Stock Car race at Tri-County Motor Speedway.
Wilson, a rookie competing at both Tri-County and Hickory Motor Speedway full time this season has been one of the young guys to keep an eye on as he begins to progress, but no one expected to see him grace victory lane so soon as in only his third start at TCMS he picked up his first career victory. Wilson’s victory came with all the top drivers competing at the track including championship favorites, Jesse LeFevers and RA Brown.
LeFevers qualified on the pole for the third straight race, but due to the tracks “roll of the dice” invert system, he was relegated to a third place start after rolling a three during pre-race activities. Starting on the pole after the invert would be Dexter Canipe, Jr. with Wilson starting second, LeFevers third, UARA rookie, Brennan Poole fourth and Tri-County rookie, Megan Reitenour starting fifth.
On the start Canipe would fall out of the lead quickly as Wilson jumped to the point, but behind him was LeFevers and everyone in attendance just knew that the defending race winner was just waiting for his chance to pounce on the rookie. Wilson continued outfront past halfway and then through a couple of late cautions as LeFevers seemingly waited to make his move, but Wilson was too stout for LeFevers and went on to capture his first career victory and solidify himself as a championship contender even as a rookie.
Wilson was followed to the finish by LeFevers, Poole, Canipe and Brown. Reitenour, who had her best run of the season was involved in one of the late cautions thus keeping her from getting her first top five finish. For Poole it was his best career finish matching a third place effort in his last appearance at Tri-County, but this time no post-race tech was needed to aid the young driver.
