Qualifying for today’s Season Opening Twin 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars and 75-lap Limited Late Model race is completed and it’s a pair of young drivers on the pole for each race. Chase Purdy and Colby Howard will start from the pole position in the Late Model Stock Car and Limited Late Model races respectively.
Purdy is running just his third race ever in a Late Model Stock Car. In his first race he picked up the win after a side by side battle with Dylan Hall here at Greenville Pickens Speedway in the inaugural Winter Meltdown Southeast Limited Late Model race. He backed that up with a top ten finish in the IceBreaker 200 a week ago at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Today he put his Hawk McCall Motorsports entry on the pole for tonights twin 75-lap features.
Howard is a third generation driver here at Greenville Pickens Speedway. His father Rodney qualified on the outside pole for the Late Model feature and Colby put his car on the pole for the Limited Late Model race. Howard’s grandfather, Buddy has a long history here at Greenville Pickens winning four championships here in consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1980.
Purdy bested Howard’s fast time as the next to last car to go out while Howard was among the first of the cars to go out. Notable drivers in the field Trey Gibson, Dylan Hall and David Roberts will lineup third, fourth and fifth respectively. Kenneth Headen has pulled his entry for this event and left the track after breaking a rear end and crashing his car in practice.
