WAYNESVILLE, NC :: Roger Powell won six races en route to the track championship at Newport Motor Speedway in Tennessee. The championship was Powell’s second Late Model Stock Car championship.
Powell, 32, is a veteran of the sport who is a former champion at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina (2009). He has also competed at Hickory Motor Speedway, Tri-County Motor Speedway and in the now-defunct UARA-STARS tour during his racing career. He has been racing off and on at Newport Motor Speedway since 2002. To date, Powell estimates he has around 45 wins in a Late Model.
Powell said he was good at Newport every time he raced. He hadn’t planned on racing for the championship but his season-long performance would win him the championship.
“We always run good at Newport,” Powell stated. “We always expected to win a few more races. I just felt good. We expected to win races and weren’t worried about the championship. We won six or seven races and finished second to Lee Tissot about four or five times. I think that’s what we ended up winning.”
Roger Powell hopes to race again next season but he says he’s currently going through a divorce and that may sideline him from competing in 2015. However, Powell is intrigued by the new CARS Late Model Stock Tour and, if he can race, he may compete in that tour.
“I’m going through a divorce so I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Powell said. “I’ll probably take care of my girl, I don’t know if I’m going to race. We tossed around the idea with that new CARS Tour deal. If we do something, it will probably be that.”
