FAIRLAWN, VA :: Lee Pulliam picked up his 14th and 15th wins of the 2013 season on Saturday night, sweeping twin Late Model features at Motor Mile Speedway. The two victories should pad Pulliam’s lead atop the NASCAR Whelen All American Series (NWAAS) National Standings.
“I never get tired of winning,” Pulliam said. “You should’ve seen us in that car, fighting that wheel trying to hold off Peyton Sellers there. He’s getting better and better each week. We had our work cut out tonight. It was a dogfight. I didn’t want to see those last two cautions (in the second race). His car was really good on cold tires. We were finally able to pull away just a couple car lengths and get the win.”
Pulliam was able to beat NWAAS National Championship contenders Deac McCaskill, Tommy Lemons, Jr. and Chad Finchum, among others, at Motor Mile in his twin victories. With full fields in both races, the races would could for maximum points.
“Any time you have a full car count, it’s huge and you’ve got to make the most out of the opportunity,” Pulliam stated. “We felt we let one slip away from us last time with a wheel failure. We came back this time and got both of them. Wow, we had to work extremely hard for it.”
Peyton Sellers scored a third place finish in the first race and a second place finish in the second race after scoring the pole.
“We needed a long run,” Sellers said. “On the short runs, we could tag along with him but my right front tire was about shot there and we just couldn’t get it going. On the long runs, we actually got to his bumper and I was getting ready to make a race of it but it just didn’t work out.”
Adam Long finished second in the first race but dropped out of competition in the second feature. Josh Berry finished in third in the second race. Deac McCaskill finished fourth and Brandon Dean finished fifth in the first of the two races. In the second race, Dean finished fourth and Tommy Lemons, Jr. finished fifth.
GR Waldrop scored the win in the 50 lap Limited Sportsman race, a race that featured seven cautions. Waldrop inherited the lead on the last lap when Kyle Barnes and Karl Budzevski wrecked while racing for the lead.
“This is definitely up there as one of the greatest moments in my life right now,” Waldrop remarked. “We had a lot of success in go-karts. This is my first win in a stock car so I’m really happy. One of those races where everything worked out at the end.”
Matt Taylor finished in second and Brian Reedy has credited with finishing in third in the final rundown.
Pulliam’s victories on Saturday night brought his career win total to 64 in NWAAS Late Model competition. With twin wins, Pulliam, the reigning NWAAS National Champion, will add to his points lead in the 2013 National Standings.
