Former NASCAR star Sterling Marlin has announced plans to field a Super Late Model for 20-year-old Preston Bores beginning with the North-South Super Late Model Challenge on April 7 at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville.

Marlin, a two-time Daytona 500 winner, and Bores recently came to terms on a multi-race deal that will take the pairing to tracks throughout the Southeast. A full schedule will be released at a later date.

Bores’ has raced in the Pro Late Model class at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville since 2015, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2015 after finishing sixth in the track championship standings. He’s scored multiple top-five finishes, including a best finish of second. Last July he made his first laps in a Super Late Model in competition at Indiana’s Lucas Oil Raceway.

“I plan on taking that experience and improving on it, and with the help of everyone at SMR, I believe we can contend for wins,” said Bores. “Everyone at Sterling Marlin Racing has shown the drive, determination and passion it takes to win races and I’m excited to be a part of that.

“Racing at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville in the past three seasons has given me quite a few laps there and may give me a bit of an advantage over some of the other drivers. I’m eager to get back in the seat and look forward to contending for wins in a super late model with SMR.”

When Marlin was asked how he would feel seeing someone else behind the wheel of one of his race cars, he couldn’t help but express his excitement.

“We are extremely excited to have Preston on board in the super car and the truth is he’s talented, doesn’t tear his stuff up and usually finds his way into the top-five, so hell, I hope he wins,” Marlin said. “We wouldn’t have put him in the car if we didn’t know we were going to have a chance to win with Preston. The super races have a lot of top notch drivers, so we need to work on getting him what he needs to qualify up front and not have to work into the top 5 during the race. If he’s starting up front he can concentrate on saving what he needs to compete with Bubba and all the super boys for wins.”

Marlin and Bores are set to begin testing at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville in advance of the North-South Super Late Model Challenge. The event is tri-sanctioned by the CARS Super Late Model Tour, the ARCA/CRA Super Series powered by JEGS and the Southern Super Series.

A complete 2018 schedule for Bores and Sterling Marlin Racing will be announced soon. All sponsorship inquiries should be directed to Tonya McCallister with MPM Marketing.
