The field for the 2015 Valley Star Credit Union 300 is already stout. The best drivers in the Southeast including the 2015 Nation Champion will invade Martinsville Speedway this weekend for a chance at the coveted Grandfather clock and a $27,000 payday. And while everyone knew what to expect as in who would be going for the win from the open test last week, there competition just got a little bit tighter… Dillon Bassett will be there and going for the win.

As we were at the test last week, Bassett was walking around beating the bushes looking for a ride. But as in today’s racing world, a rent-a-ride for Martinsville is no cheap option, and already running a full K&N schedule with their last race this Friday at Dover, things looked bleak. But then came an opportunity from the Jay Hedgecock stable.

“I had talked with some friends over there a while back and it was just too much,” Bassett said. “But after the test we talked again on Thursday and put a deal together. I’ll be in a Hedgecock car for the first time ever. We were supposed to test some this week but the weather is kinda hurting everyone, including me getting the K&N race in at Dover Friday afternoon.”

When asked what his expectations were at Martinsville considering he had never drove the car or worked with the team… well, anyone who knows Dillon already knows the answer.

“It has a steering wheel and four tires that I’m going to drive slap off it. It’s a race car, I know what to do with them, I’m going to put it in the front. I know Jay will have a good piece there for me and it’ll be on me from there, I feel really good about it.”

After making the six and half hour drive from Dover on Friday, the Bassett’s will take up residence in the parking lot of Martinsville for some shuteye. Then, even before the sun rises the cars will start the trip through tech, and the #44 will be there catching stares and starting conversations. Business just picked up at Martinsville
