Josh Oakley held off a hard charging Stacey Puryear to win the 75 lap late model stock car race at Orange County Speedway on Saturday night.
“This is the first time we’ve run this car since July” the hometown driver stated in victory lane. Oakley led the last 18 laps to take his third victory of 2015. Pole sitter Chris Denny led the first 57 laps before his mount broke a wheel and he slammed into the second turn wall. Denny was unhurt.
Puryear came to the track after running third in an earlier race in the evening at Asheboro’s Caraway Speedway. “After the officials weighed the car post race, they said we were free to go. We saw we had enough time to come here and race” he explained.
The Late Model Stock Car feature was the last of a seven race agenda that made up the Chad Pergerson and Kevin Bowen Memorial event. Chuck Lawson completed the podium finishers in a 13 car field. Behind fourth place Mason Hudson, points leader Craig Moore survived a spin to finish fifth and maintained a sizeable point lead over Lawson with twin races remaining on November 7.
Layne Riggs captured a $2700 prize by winning the pole and the 50 lap clash in the limited sportsman division. Riggs was the class of a 16 car field and easily outran South Boston Speedway regulars Danny Willis Jr.and Mike Jones.
In the night’s other races… Anthony Sparks outran Jared Gilles to win in street stock, Danny Wenstead edged Mikey Milam in pure stock, Anthony Bennett continued his season domination in super mini truck, Brandon Baker triumphed in Mod 4 and Kenneth Smith scored in Vintage Sportsman.
