Matt Piercy knows he has his work cut out for him in Saturday night’s Fall Brawl at Hickory Motor Speedway but he hopes he can finish the race, and the season, with a victory.
Piercy, the 2015 Hickory Motor Speedway track champion, knows it’s a tough field of cars, but he’s optimistic about his chances in the long, 200 lap race.
“We’ve got a lot of quality cars tonight,” Piercy said. “I think we have as good a shot as anybody. It’s a 200 lap race so hopefully we can conserve our stuff. At the end of the day, it’s going to be about whose car drives best at the end. Hopefully we’ll be close.”
Piercy is set to graduate from University of North Carolina (UNC) Charlotte in December with a degree in mechanical engineering. With that, and other career opportunities in racing, Piercy may not be running as much in Late Models next season as he has in the past few years.
“I’ll probably still run a few Late Model races,” Piercy explained. “We’re looking at some opportunities at moving up. I also graduate from UNC Chalotte in Mechanical Engineering in December so I’m also going to try to explore some opportunities there so we’ll see what the best option is and go from there.
“We’re trying to work on a few things but nothing’s set in stone. Hopefully we can get in a Truck. That would be nice so we’ll see how it goes.”
With his sights set on NASCAR, Piercy feels Hickory Motor Speedway is the best track for developing talent in short track racing.
“It’s a line sensitive track and it’s one of those places that makes you a better driver at different places. There’s probably no better place you can start out than at Hickory.”
