ROUGEMONT, NC :: Chuck Lawson found himself in victory lane twice during Saturday night’s Paul Ring Memorial at Orange County Speedway. Lawson scored the victory in the Late Model main event as well as in the Limited Sportsman race.
Thomas Scott, making his first career Orange County Speedway start, led the field to the green flag in the 100-lap Late Model feature. Scott led a four car breakaway during much of the first half of the race while Lawson, Stacy Puryer and Craig Moore filled up Scott’s rear-view mirror. Moore would bring out the only caution in the event shortly past the halfway point setting up a restart which allowed Lawson to get around Scott and drive away.
“Some of the fans are booing me and some are cheering for me. I’m hearing a lot of noise so I must be doing something right,” Lawson, who’s earned the nicknames ‘Rowdy’ and ‘Mr. Excitement’ for his aggressive driving style, said in victory lane.
Scott held off Puryear to finish second.
“The car was fine in clean air, but once we got behind Chuck it never felt right again,” Scott stated.
Puryear finished third with Chris Denny finishing fourth while GR Waldrop rounded out the top-five.
In the 35-lap Limited Sportsman feature, it was Lawson again scoring the victory after surviving an early race duel with Brandon Baker. Baker was relegated to sixth before the race ended. Donald Brace, Jerry Hinesley, Daniel Schadt and Justin Newlin rounded out the top-five.
Racing action returns to Orange County Speedway on Saturday night, June 28th.
