BLOOMINGDALE, TN :: Racing enthusiasts from across the Tri-Cities have patiently waited for the 2015 race season, and that wait is nearly over.
Just over 40 days remain until the season opening race at Kingsport Speedway. The speedway’s 50th year is slated to host 23 races, including five different touring series and weekly racing programs.
“We’re very excited about what 2015 holds in store for Kingsport Speedway,” said Karen Tunnell, general manager. “We have great Friday night racing and multiple special events scheduled.”
Weekly racing kicks off with two Saturday events – March 21 (2 p.m.) and March 28 (3 p.m.).
The first Friday night event of 2015 will take place on April 3 and the second on April 10.
With the NASCAR Sprint Cup and XFINITY Series at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 17-19, Kingsport Speedway will host a special Thursday night event on April 16.
Friday night racing then returns for two weeks — April 24 and May 1 — before the Pro All Star Series and KOMA Unwind Open Wheel Modified Madness Series invade the 0.375-mile oval on May 8.
May 15 will see Friday night racing action return with twin LMSC races on tap.
The Southeast Super Truck Series, Southeast Super Street Series and Carolina Vintage Series head to town for their first of two events on Saturday, May 23.
After a one week hiatus, Friday night racing returns on May 29 and continues through the regular season finale on August 28.
Currently set to wind up the 2015 season is the second stop at “The Concrete Jungle” for the Southeast Super Truck Series, Southeast Super Street Series and Carolina Vintage Series on Saturday, September 19.
2015 features seven divisions of NASCAR-sanctioned racing. Late Model Stock, Street Stock, Pure-4, Rookie Pure-4 and Legends divisions will compete on a regular basis. Mod-4 and Pure Street divisions will take turn about rotating into the weekly schedule.
Kingsport Speedway will continue its partnership with Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Va. Both speedways will continue their operation under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
With mostly favorable weather this winter, the facility has received needed repairs and updates. Improvements include repairing restrooms on A side, B side and the infield, as well as creating a souvenir stand underneath the control tower.
After remaining dormant for many seasons, the Kingsport Speedway Miniway will return to operation in 2015. Work is currently underway cleaning and making needed repairs to the facility.
Throughout the season, Kingsport Speedway will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Fans are encouraged to share their favorite memories of “The Concrete Jungle” during the speedway’s golden year.
Before the smell of race fuel fills the air, fans can receive a preview of the season on Saturday, February 28 at the Kingsport Town Center. Multiple race teams will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. to display their race cars and sign autographs.
