PENSACOLA, FL :: Erik Jones picked up his second consecutive Snowball Derby after Chase Elliott was disqualified for having tungsten in his car. Tech Director Ricky Brooks says he was tipped off to it. Jones scored the victory without ever leading a single lap in the race.
“It’s racing and sometimes you’re going to have tech infractions,” Jones said. “I’m happy to get the win though, back-to-back like that. That’s amazing doing it with a whole different crew in KBM… It’s pretty awesome picking up the win in both the (Winchester) 400 and the Snowball Derby in the same year. That’s something I never would’ve dreamed of. To bring it home again, that’s pretty special.”
Jones scored the victory in the wild 2012 race. Earlier this year, he became the youngest driver to win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – a record that had been held by Chase Elliott (who also won a Truck Series race in 2013) before Jones’ victory in Phoenix.
Elliott had dominated the entire weekend, setting new track records in qualifying for both the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby and winning the Snowflake 100. He had lead the most laps in Sunday’s race and was the first car to cross the stripe.
