HAMPTON, VA :: In its short history, the Hampton Heat 200 has become one of Late Model Stock Car racing’s crowned jewels.
The first Hampton Heat 200 was held in 2008 and was won by Nick Smith. In 2009, the event exploded in popularity as Woody Howard went on to score the victory. CE Falk won the next two installments and Matt Bowling won in 2012, but it was the thriller in 2013 that put the race on the map.
Prior to the 2013 installment of the Hampton Heat 200, the race had only been run by regulars at Langley Speedway and a handful of South Boston drivers. In 2013, several drivers, including Peyton Sellers and popular female racer Annabeth Barnes, traveled from Motor Mile Speedway to Langley Speedway when the race at Motor Mile was cancelled due to rain. The race saw the largest field in event history as well as a capacity crowd — and the capacity crowd was not disappointed by the thriller they witnessed.
The 2014 event was plagued by rains all day and didn’t start until late night, but the popularity had caught fire. Once again, the race recorded the largest field in event history and a capacity crowd that waited out the rains as they watched hometown hero CE Falk clinch his third Hampton Heat victory.
