Mooresville, NC(October 25, 2012) — If Allen Purkhiser was worried after cracking a piston on his primary car Saturday afternoon at Hickory Motor Speedway, he certainly didn’t show it.
Instead, Purkhiser’s Premiere Motorsports team pulled out his back-up car and the South Carolina native drove it to his second-career victory in the Rev-Oil Pro Cup Series at the three-eighths-mile asphalt oval.
That cool demeanor under pressure netted Purkhiser the Cool Under Pressure Award presented by FLUIDYNE. Purkhiser also took home the Brake of the Race Award presented by Pro-System Brakes and product certificates from Brown & Miller and Cool Shirt.
Other contingency award winners from Hickory were Caleb Holman (Lap Leader Award presented by U-Pull, U-Save and the Halfway Leader Award presented by Holley), J.P. Morgan (Koolmat Koolmove of the Race Award, T&D Rocker Arms High Finisher Award and product certificates from Cool Shirt and Brown & Miller), Nathan Russell (Staubli Highest Finisher Award) and Lucas Ransone (product certificate from Cool Shirt).
Championship Series Update: J.P. Morgan can all but pop the cork on the championship champagne bottle.
With his third-place finish Saturday at Hickory Motor Speedway, Morgan simply needs to start The Championship 250 on Nov. 3 Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, N.C., to clinch his first Rev-Oil Pro Cup Series championship.
Allen Purkhiser jumped from fifth to second in the championship standings following his victory at Hickory. He is followed closely by rookie Dalton Hopkins, who continued his recent hot streak at Hickory with a career-best fourth-place finish.
Purkhiser only leads Hopkins by a scant eight points in the battle for second in the championship standings. Texan Tyler Young is fourth, only 19 points behind Purkhiser in the standings.
In the Rev-Oil Pro Cup Series Car Owner Championship, the No. 23 J&R Racing Chevrolet holds a comfortable 112-point edge over the Premiere Motorsports No. 68 Chevrolet. The No. 08 David Hopkins Racing Chevrolet is third, three points behind Premiere Motorsports.
Rookie Points Update: Dalton Hopkins increased his lead in the Rookie of the Year standings to 43 points over Nathan Russell following Saturday’s race at Hickory Motor Speedway. One more solid run at Orange County Speedway on Nov. 3 should lock up the rookie title for Hopkins.
