Dillon, SC(September 26, 2010) — Hal Goodson led all fifty laps at Dillon Motor Speedway Saturday night to win the Late Model feature in a green to checker run as the South Carolina track wrapped up their season.
Goodson set fast time and led the twenty car field to the green from pole position and was never seriously challenged. As Goodon set sail Doug Barefoot and Strom Altman battled it out for second, with Barefoot taking the spot by lap five.
That was pretty much the race as Goodson lapped the field up through tenth position on his way to a dominating win. Barefoot, Oltman and Logan Bunning provided most of the evening’s drama as they weaved in and out of traffic in an effort to catch Goodson and each other.
With a handful of laps to go Bunning finally got around Oltman to take third. Coastal Plains Speedway regular Jerry Burns got around Dillon regular Archie Adams, Jr. for fifth, Jamey Lee was seventh, Jon Lane eighth, Jason Clark ninth and Archie Adams, Sr. rounded out the top ten.
In third track regular Bunning described a night full of traffic. “We just couldn’t break free from traffic all night,” said Bunning. “That made it hard to get under the seven (Altman) car, but he came up on a lapped car and I went three wide on the outside to get around him.”
“Leadfoot” Barefoot was on the gas all night but acknowledged he had nothing for Goodson. “We were just too tight in the center and loose off,” said Barefoot, “it’s been like that all year. Hal was awesome today. You just don’t come here and beat Hal, you’ve got to be good.”
Veteran Late Model driver Goodson had a good couple of weeks. Last Saturday he wrapped up the track’s Super Track title. “We had a pretty good car,” said Goodson. “The last two races that car made about ten laps total. We had some mechanical problems but tonight we had a good car and we showed it. I just show up to the track and most nights these guys have the car ready to go, one hundred percent.”
Eighth place was good enough for Jon Lane to pick up his first Late Model championship. “We’ve been running Late Models since about two-thousand four, we’ve picked up a few wins here and there and we won four here this year,” said Lane. “We’ve been close for a championship before but always had something knock us out. This means a lot, I wanted to win this for my granddad before I quit racing. This is a family effort and I’ve got to give all the credit to them.”
DILLON NOTES: No less than five competitors from Coastal Plains Raceway in Jacksonville, NC went to Dillon on Saturday, even though CCRP was running. Dillon Labor Day winner Michael Elliott had a tough night, finishing last. Jarrett Andretti finished third in the USAC Ford Focus Midget race. Jarrett is the son of former Indy Car and NASCAR driver John Andretti, who was at Dillon on Saturday.
