South Boston, VA (April 9th, 2012) — Darrell Gilchrist scored his first career NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division win in the Easter Bunny 150 race here Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

The Raleigh, N.C. resident bolted into the lead on the final restart with 19 laps left in the race and edged runner-up Dustin Storm of Huntingtown, Md. by 1.058 second at the finish to nail down his first career Late Model Stock Car Division win.

Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Va., Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. and Hunter Devers of King George, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Rusty Skewes finished sixth and was the final driver to finish on the lead lap. Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Va. and Mike Chambers of Roxboro, N.C. finished seventh and eighth respectively, one lap down. Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. and Austin Self of  Austin, Tex. rounded out the top ten finishers.

The race was highly competitive throughout, but the complexion of the race changed when Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C. and Gilchrist made contact while battling for the lead on lap 124 following a restart. Oakley’s car spun and several of the race’s top contenders including Sellers, Anderson, Holdren, Self and Ronald Hill piled up in the second turn.

Oakley’s car and Anderson’s car received heavy damage in the crash and were sidelined in the crash. The other cars received varying amounts of damage.

Storm’s car sustained some minor damage in the incident as he attempted to avoid the mishap. After that, Storm was not able to mount a serious challenge to Gilchrist.

There were eight lead changes among four drivers, with Gilchrist leading four times for a total of 94 laps, including the final 27 circuits.

Gilchrist averaged 51.212 mph in the race, which took one hour, 10 minutes and 17 seconds to complete.

A total of 21 cars started the race.

McCarty Wins Limited Sportsman Race

Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, N.C. got his season off to a good start by winning the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

McCarty and defending division champion Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. battled for the lead for much of the race, with McCarty taking the lead for good with 19 laps to go and edging Willis by 1.538 at the finish.

Mike Jones of South Boston, Va., Daniel Moss of Danville, Va. and Michael Maresca of Hannawah Falls, N.Y. rounded out the top five finishers.

There were two lead changes in the race.

McCarty averaged 41.772 mph in the race that took 28 minutes and 43 seconds to complete.

Allred, Crews Split Pure Stock Division Twinbill

Defending division champion Joe Allred, III of Scottsburg, Va. and Nathan Crews of Long Island, Va. split wins Saturday night in the pair of 30-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Allred edged Crews by 2.872 seconds in the first 30-lap race, with Crews, edging Allred, who started fourth in the nightcap, by .326 second in a two-lap sprint to the finish that followed the race’s final caution period.

Stuart Crews of Long Island, Va., Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. and Libby Privette of Nathalie, Va. rounded out the top five finishers in the first race.

Trey Crews of Halifax, Va. finished third in the nightcap, with Crosby and Stuart Crews rounding out the top five finishers.

Slayton Sweeps Twinbill For MAD Modifieds

Hunter Slayton of Richmond, Va. had a big night, sweeping the pair of 25-lap races for the MAD (Modified Affordable Division) Modifieds. It was the first time Slayton had won a race in the regional touring series.

Jimmy Humblet of Shiloh, N.C. and David Winslow rounded out the top three finishers in the first race.

Kyle Wood of Powhatan, Va. and Humblet rounded out the top three finishers in the second race.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

The ground-pounding cars of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will be featured Saturday night, April 14, as South Boston Speedway hosts the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

The stars and cars of the touring NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will be featured in a 150-lap race. Sharing the spotlight are twin 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division.

Practice will begin at 1:35 p.m. and will end at 3:25 p.m., with alternating sessions for the Modifieds and Late Model Stock Cars.

Grandstand gates will open at 4 p.m., with qualifying time trials set to start at 4:15 p.m. A driver autograph session will be held at 6 p.m., with the first race getting the green flag at 7 p.m.

Advance adult tickets are available for $10 through Friday at 5 p.m. and may be purchased through the speedway office. Adult general admission tickets on race day are $15. Youth ages 7-12 will be admitted for $5 when accompanied by a paid adult. Kids ages six and under are admitted free with an accompanying paying adult.

The rain date for the event is Sunday, April 15.
