HICKORY, NC :: David Garbo, Jr. picked up his biggest win of his career on Saturday night in the 37th Annual Bobby Isaac Memorial at the Hickory Motor Speedway. Garbo and teammates Blake Jones and Jeremy Sorel completed a Fat Heat Racing sweep of the top three finishing positions. Garbo started sixth for the 150 lap event, never falling outside of the top ten during the event.
“We rode as much as we could, about 80 percent. The 12 car (McDaniel) was riding pretty hard, I didn’t know how hard he was riding. I guess he was going harder then we thought.” said Garbo in victory lane.
“To win here at Hickory Motor Speedway, one of the most famous short tracks in the country it’s just awesome.”
Blake Jones would bring home a second place finish after starting sixth. Jones would move his way to the front of the field, but would pit around the lap 50 mark when he had a flat left front tire.
Jones would battle back to the top five. A late race restart would setup a battle between Jones and teammate Jeremy Sorel for second. Both drivers would throw caution to the wind going for second. The final corner would see Jones and Sorel get loose. Jones would edge Sorel to the line, but Sorel would have some words for Jones following the race.
“I think we had the best car here” said Jones following his second place finish. “We got struck by some bad luck early, had a flat left front, just riding, so I had to abuse it a lot more then I would have liked too.” continued Jones.
“I hate how hard we had to race, but that’s racing.” said Jones when asked about the contact between he and Sorel. “You’re not going to pull over and let people go. It’s the last corner of the last lap, everybody wants to win.”
For Garbo, it marks his third win of the season and third win at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Jamie Yelton’s Fat Head Racing would bring home a team first, 1-2-3 finish for his cars.
“It’s been a lot of hard work here lately. I’ve gotta thank Jay Hedgecock Racing, we’ve just been doing a lot of work.” said Yelton. “We’ve been at the shop a lot, working late hours.”
Australian and UARA-STARS regular Brodie Kostecki would come home fourth, followed by JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry in fifth.
