ALTAMAHAW, NC :: Dean Fogleman scored his second career Late Model Stock Car victory and his first win since 2008 on Friday night holding off Dustin Rumley in the closing stages of a thrilling 60 lap race.  Rumley did everything he could, short of dumping Fogleman, to get the lead but Fogleman was not to be denied.

Fogleman and Rumley staged a classic duel in the final 15 laps of the race.  Rumley had the fastest car and chased down Fogleman but he couldn’t quite get around him.  Rumley tried passing high, looking low and even tried using a little chrome horn to pass Fogleman but Fogleman was able to hold him off.

“The car’s been good the last few races we’ve run out here,” Fogleman said.  “The car was actually better last race than this race but I guess everybody else was off as well.  I was under driving the car (in the closing laps).  I was letting off early and getting in late.  I wasn’t really looking in the mirror until they told me (Rumley was closing).  I don’t know if we went or he faded but we held on.”

Rumley’s second place finish should keep him atop the point standings at Ace Speedway after he won the first Late Model race of the season.  He said he thought about wrecking Fogleman but decided not to do it, saying that Fogleman deserved to win the race as hard as he ran.

“Fogleman had a lot more grip than the rest of us,” Rumley said.  “I could run my line pretty good but I just couldn’t get up under him and get a run.  We just didn’t have enough grip.  The car was real free when I turned up under someone.  I had a real good run off two one time and he pulled down the straightaway and I don’t know if he was blocking or he got loose too.  We were all over the place.  I thought about turning him but I decided I wasn’t going to wreck him as hard as he’s tried to win.  He was driving his heart out in that race and I wasn’t going to take it from him like that.”

RD Smith, who started on the pole after the top five cars in qualifying were inverted, finished third while Barry Beggarly finished fourth and Brad Kurth finished fifth.

In the Limited Late Models, Boo Boo Dalton added to his Ace Speedway win total.  Dalton passed Randy Sampson to score the victory.  Ziggy Zimmerman finished third, Jason Payne finished fourth and Steve Hatley finished fifth.

Brian King held off Devin Steele to win a wild modified race that saw numerous wrecks.   The first 15 lap of the 30 lap race saw a spree of cautions and a red flag but, once the field made it past halfway, the second half was tame.

Chris Lamb swept both races in the USAC Midget twin features.
