HAMPTON, VA :: Just when one in house rivalry settles on down, you can bet another one can soon be expected at Langley Speedway in the Late Model division.  With sweeping corners at just six degrees, it’s nearly unavoidable not to expect some sort of contact when battles for position are contested. With a full field of eighteen cars on the grid and add the fact that returning to Langley Speedway was four time track champion CE Falk. It’s all but given; a great night of racing was going to go down at the tricky .395 mile oval. Coming into the night, Greg Edwards, Matt Waltz and Nick Smith have been the class of the field at Langley Speedway, all making it known that the playground belonged to them. Question was, how well would CE Falk perform and could he play spoiler to the evenings racing.

Qualifying took place with Matt Waltz back on pole to lead a full field to green. His lap of 16.031 sec or 88.703 mph bested Greg Edwards by .035 thousandths of a second to share the front row. Other top qualifiers were Nick Smith, CE Falk and Connor Hall turning in another fine qualifying run in his rookie season to make up the five best. Race action was underway and like a shot from a canon was Matt Waltz enjoying an eight car length lead by lap fifteen in the event. On back was a great battle with Edwards and Smith for second with Smith earning the spot. Falk was in the mix early as well before falling back well into the fourth position in the grid. Also picking up spots was Brenden Queen in one of his better starts to the race showing fifth.

After two brief caution periods, wasn’t long before the leader Matt Waltz would secure the top spot once again. It also wasn’t long before an all too familiar side by side battle for second ensued between CE Falk and Greg Edwards. After contact between the two, Falk gained the advantage bringing Smith along with him for third leaving Edwards alone in fourth. While Waltz pulled away, eyes were on Edwards gaining on Smith. After going around Smith, wasn’t long before Edwards reeled in Falk and what appeared to be more contact between the two saw Edwards get the better of his rival this time to claim the two spot on the grid. CE Falk tried one last time to get to the rear bumper of Edwards but had to settle for third in this race feature. When lap 64 clicked on the board in was Matt Waltz crossing the stripe first for the win. Edwards, Falk, Smith and coming on strong at the end was Casey Wyatt rounding out the five best.

Bit of a twist to the lineup of the second feature as Matt Waltz would start in a backup car and at the rear of the field. Strangely enough, motor issues keep the race winner from starting in his primary car and never became a factor in race number two on the evening. But it made for an interesting scene at the front of the field as CE Falk and Greg Edwards shared the front row. Reports of some words exchanged after the first feature between the two and their teams made for an exciting start for the second 64 lap feature. As always, the field was set according to how they finished the first race and when the green flag waved, it was on from there. CE Falk gained the upper hand quickly with Edwards just behind.

As lap five went up on the board, so did the battle for the lead as Edwards showed no mercy to the leader by sending Falk up the track and taking over the lead. Nick Smith soon capitalized as well going by Falk as did Casey Wyatt in what might be his best run of the 2014 season. Soon though, CE Falk would regroup and went back after the third spot as the races first caution waved on lap 36 of the event. Back to green flag racing and Greg Edwards wasted no time jumping out into the lead. Falk was able to benefit from the restart claiming the two spot but was being harassed for the position by Nick Smith who after several laps must have had enough and decided to move Falk for the spot.

After the races final caution period on lap 45, were back to green flag racing and Greg Edwards was all on display for this one. Smith would give chase but the battle for third heated up between CE Falk and Casey Wyatt. However for CE Falk, same scenario, different result as Falk would get booted up the hill and this time, having to loose several positions and finished this one in sixth. But back up front, Greg Edwards was untouchable and easily cruised to another win at Langley Speedway. Nick Smith, Casey Wyatt, Terry Carroll and Duane Shreeves in their best performances this year completed the races top five. Racing picks up again for the NWAAS Late Models June 14th where a 125 lap event is on the schedule for next week.
