Jeff Melton picked up one of the biggest wins of his career on Saturday night, beating out 20 other Street Stocks in the $2,000-to-win Mid-Atlantic Street Stock (MASS) Championship Series race at Dillon Motor Speedway.
Melton, 50, scored the pole in the race and led wire-to-wire in the 100 lap feature to claim his second victory in MASS competition. Melton’s first win came in the New Year’s classic on January 10th.
“We worked so hard on the car and everybody is so competitive,” Melton said. “It was hot, I was wore out but when you get a victory and go through what you go through to get it, it makes it better. I know the guys I’m running against and they’ve got big money in their cars so it’s cool to win like that. I won a couple but I think this even means more because of the amount of work that went into it.”
Melton spoke about the series itself, which consists of eight races at five different tracks and continues to show extraordinary growth each race in only the second season.
“It’s great,” Melton remarked. “This series is getting bigger and bigger. He’s able to pull in good sponsors. The purse money is good. It’s going to grow. They had four races last year and eight this year and might get more races and more money next year. It’s growing and a lot of people are getting on board. It’s a great deal.”
So far, the series has completed four races. Melton has two wins on the season, both at Dillon. Gregg Barnette picked up a win in the second MASS race of the season at Dillon Motor Speedway on March 21st and Sonny Schoffen picked up a win at Concord Spedway on May 22nd.
The next race in the MASS tour will be held on August 15th at Myrtle Beach Speedway. After that, the series will head to Southern National Motorsports Park on September 12th and then the final two races will be held in South Carolina – one at Dillon on October 25th and the finale at the Sumter Speedway dirt track on November 7th.
Averitt Lucas picked up the win in the Late Model race at Dillon over BJ Mackey, Thomas Andrews, Friday night’s Wake County Speedway winner Bobby Gower and Randy Benson who rounded out the top-five in the 23 car field.
