Deac McCaskill will be making his first start in a Super Late Model in over a decade on Saturday night when he races in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) race at South Boston Speedway in Virginia.
McCaskill, 37, has not raced in a Super Late Model since the turn of the century and has never competed in the PASS South Super Late Model touring series which was founded in 2006 by Tom Mayberry. McCaskill is teaming up with Randy Renfrow and Coulter Motorsports to pilot the ride vacated by Trevor Noles earlier this summer.
“Randy puts together good cars,” McCaskill said. “They’re fast every week. Hopefully I can do a good job at it now.”
Deac McCaskill has won races at South Boston before in a Late Model Stock Car so he is familiar with the track. That familiarity with the track has the four-time Southern National Motorsports Park track champion optimistic about Saturday night.
“I feel pretty good,” McCaskill explained. “It’s a track we’ve won races at. The biggest key to these cars is tire management. These tires are a little bit softer than what we’re used to running in Late Model Stock Cars. The track is pretty abrasive. The outside line comes in pretty good there at the end of the race. Just seems like whoever saves tires the best prevails there at the end so that’s going to be a little more of an adjustment dealing. We’re not used to saving a whole lot of tires.”
The main adjustment for McCaskill will be with the car itself.
“I hope we can figure it out pretty quickly,” McCaskill remarked. “These cars are a lot lighter, a lot more horsepower and the brakes are stronger. We’re just trying to get a feel for it.”
McCaskill has been racing in the Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) Late Model Stock Tour this season. He currently sits third in points, nine markers behind series points leader Brayton Haws and five markers behind Myatt Snider. McCaskill has one win in CARS competition which came in the May 30th race at Southern National Motorsports Park. McCaskill feels pretty good about his chances looking ahead to the final three races on the tour.
“We’re excited,” McCaskill commented. “They made a tire change so all our notes have gone out the window but we’re going to a tire that we’ve run on before so we’ll try to get to the track soon and start testing and building some notes before we go to Concord. That’s a track I haven’t been to in a while. We’ve got three unique tracks comiung up. We gained a lot of points aty Orange County. I was happy with the way the car drove at Orange County and we’re excited to get to Concord . We’ll see what we’ve got there.”
