CALLAWAY, VA :: Daryn Cockram brought the brooms with him to Franklin County Speedway on Sunday, picking up his second and third wins of the 2014 season in twin 35-lap races.
Cockram set the fast lap in qualifying and started on the pole for the first race. He went on to lead wire-to-wire to score the victory. An invert for the second race put Cockram to the fifth position to start the race. By lap 10, he was in the lead, getting around Wesley Thomason and going on to lead the final 25 laps.
Cockram, racing the car he prepared for Jamie Byrd in the MDCU 300 at Martinsville, felt relived at the victory after coming so close to winning at Franklin County on a few occasions this season – most notably in the Memorial Day Classic, where he scored a podium finish.
“We got so close earlier this year and got it this time,” Cockram said. “We brought a car that had only been run one time all year. It was something to build on going in to the final money races of the year.”
With his eyes set on those races, including a $2,000-to-win Late Model race at Orange County Speedway this upcoming weekend as well as the Limited Late Model race in the Thanksgiving Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park. He also plans to compete in the season finale at Franklin County Speedway on November 2nd.
Cockram says his plans for next season are still in the works but that the same sponsors will be back. In addition to his racing next season, wherever he ultimately decides to go, he’ll also work with his daughter, Brittany. Brittany Cockram will run a full season in a Limited Late Model – likely at Franklin County Speedway and Motor Mile Speedway.
Cockram’s other victory came at Motor Mile Speedway on May 31st. He was credited with the victory after Preston McGhee was disqualified following post-race technical inspection.
