Oklahoma City, OK(June 26, 2012) — Trey Marcham’s season might have started off a little sluggish, but the last three races for the young driver have been just what the doctor ordered with a fourth place finish at Anderson, a second place finish at Newport and a drive from 22nd to 7th at Hickory.
Marcham, who moved up this season for the SouthEast Limited Late Model tour to compete in the UARA-STARS Series, Late Model Stock Car tour, has been on the top of his game each and every week with the results finally starting to show in the last three outings. With finishes of 12th in both his first two starts after getting spun in both races, he’s finally got some good luck on his side and came away with three straight top ten finishes.
Returning to the site of his first 12th place finish in the season opener at Hickory Motor Speedway, the young driver was back touring the tough 3/8 mile speedplant again. This time, due to a mishap in qualifying, the Oklahoma City, OK native would prove that you could make your way to the front of the pack. Marcham quietly was biding his time as the first half of the race clicked off lap by lap, but as the race made its way to the halfway point, it was time to go to the front.
With Hickory Motor Speedway being a gritty old track, tire wear would be the key to getting a solid finish as the track is known to chew up tires. Marcham, despite his limited experience on asphalt, managed his tires perfectly and when it counted made his way inside the top ten. In a mad scramble up front, the leaders battled hard for the win, but behind them Marcham was settling into seventh place and that’s where he would finish the 150-lap race.
“Qualifying 22nd wasn’t exactly where we wanted to be,” said Marcham. “I knew that Roger Johnson and the crew had given me a good car for the long haul though and I just needed to avoid any accidents that would happen in front of me. We were in a hornets nest back there, but my spotter got me through there pretty clean and we were able to finish seventh.”
Marcham admitted that after finishing second at Newport seven days earlier that he wanted to finish better, but that seventh wasn’t all that bad.
“Coming off the second place finish at Newport, seventh isn’t where we wanted to be, but we’ll take it after starting deep in the field on this little bullring.”
Marcham’s run from his unfortunate 22nd place start to a seventh place finish on the 3/8 mile Hickory Motor Speedway was enough to earn him the Holley Performer Award. The Holley Performer Award is awarded to the driver who passes the most cars during the course of each UARA-STARS Series race and in this race, Marcham passed 15 cars to earn the award.
Marcham will now have a couple of weeks off from his asphalt racing schedule with the UARA-STARS Series next race taking him back to Newport Speedway in Newport, TN. Newport was the site of his career best second place finish last week and returning there has Marcham hoping that he can get into victory lane.
“When we got to Newport, none of us expected to have a second place finish,” said Marcham. “But, this team is improving by leaps and bounds every week. We’re clicking right now and I hope we can finish one spot better when we go back to Newport.”
