Test Session at Hickory:  Pro Cup teams completed a test session at Hickory Motor Speedway on Sunday, with most teams using the time on track to adjust and set up their cars for the new Goodyear Racing tire to be used this season.

In attendance at the event was Goodyear Account Manager for Short Track Racing, Scott Junod.

“The set up work the teams did was very helpful. Even though it was a cold day, the tire had good grip and was very consistent,” Junod said. “What we have learned so far is that the car doesn’t require any radical set up changes to make the car fast. The teams seemed to dial the cars in very quickly. I enjoyed spending the afternoon with the Pro Cup Series, getting to know the teams and getting back on the track after a long winter.  All of us at Goodyear are looking forward to Anderson on March 24.”

Among the teams testing was the No. 23 J & R Racing with driver JP Morgan.

“We were really impressed with new tire, it held up very well, had a great grip level, a good feel to it and we’re looking forward to racing on it this season,” Morgan said. “We were really happy with our car and got continually faster as the day went on. It was an encouraging session for us and we are looking forward to starting the season.”

Open testing for Pro Cup teams will continue through March 16. After that date, all teams must have a voucher to test.

Season Ending Point Fund Established:  CARS Pro Cup Series Director Jack McNelly finalized the details of a season ending point fund for teams for the 2012 season.

The money for the point fund is being provided through ticket sales, with 15 percent of all ticket sales revenue from the 14 Pro Cup events on the 2012 schedule will be earmarked to the point fund.

The series champion will receive 20 percent of the total points fund. Teams finishing second through twelve will also receive a payout from the point fund on a declining percentage scale.

“Increasing ticket sales and establishing a points fund for our teams are two of our major goals this season,” McNelly said. “Using ticket revenue to create the point fund gives everyone in the series added incentive to sell tickets and bring bigger crowds to Pro Cup events.”

Five Questions with CARS Pro Cup Series Driver Bill Plemmons:

Off-season activities and preparations?

Bill Plemmons:  “We have been testing our late model cars a lot and running legends cars every weekend. I’ve been racing for 38 years and have always been running something. For me, the secret to being able to race is the physical and mental preparation that a driver has to put in to be able to drive a race car week in and week out. We tested our Pro Cup car this past weekend, and as a team we are very encouraged by the changes for this season. The new engine from Automotive Specialists and the Goodyear tire are going to make for great racing this season.”

2012 Season Outlook?

BP: “Well, I’m 64 years old, and coming back into the Pro Cup Series this year. I’m really looking forward to it, and being competitive each week. We should come in and be able to bring a little fun to the series and show everyone a good time. I really like meeting the fans each week, especially the young kids. We’ll be driving the No. 15 Hooters car this year.”

Favorite Race Track?

BP: “Lakeland was my favorite, and I really like IRP, in Indianapolis. It’s just a big, swooping track that gives you a lot of room to work with if you get in trouble, as well as room to avoid other people’s trouble. I also really like Memphis Motorsports Park.”

Hometown & Family?

BP: “I am from Forysth, Ga., near Locust Grove. I still live there. I have three kids, all grown and my wife Myra is my spotter.”

Hobbies outside of racing?

BP: “Hunting for white tail deer. I go all over the country to hunt deer. Illinois has great hunting, Sterling, Kan., is a great place to hunt too. I bagged six deer this year, so it was a good year for hunting.”
