14-year-old Luke Sorrow of Belton, S.C. has won all but one limited late model race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway this season, being beaten one night by Tasha Kummer, who made track history when she scored her very popular first career victory.
He’ll have a chance to continue that hot streak this Saturday night when the limited late models headline a five-division card with a 75-lap feature race.
Sorrow also picked up the win in both the Daytona1 Challenger and Pro divisions in the Southeast Limited Late Model Series at Anderson Motor Speedway last month. The series races at Greenville-Pickens next Saturday, April 23rd.
When asked what the secret of his 2016 success has been, the quiet but personable teenager and driver of the Vannoy Construction No. 9 said, “I’ve gotten a lot more seat time, and my brother (Justin) Sorrow has really become awesome at setups.”
Uniquely, Luke has to compete against his sister-in-law, Taylor (Nesbiitt) Sorrow on a regular basis, putting Justin in a bit of a humorous situation, with his wife and little brother competing against each other.
Taylor has been getting closer each time out with her No. 97, and she does not give up easily, even for “little brother”. She’ll be one to watch this weekend.
Kummer will also be in the field this weekend searching for her second win. Tasha has had a bit of a roller-coaster season with her Porter’s RV Sales No. 35 but she dominated the night she won and is surely capable of doing it again.
Colby “The Kid” Howard in the No. 16 is another 14-year-old rookie who has done everything but win since he’s been behind the wheel of the Century Concrete / Shell Machine. Colby is proven fast, and is hoping that this Saturday will be the night it all comes together in the race.
Andrew Cordell has a second place finish under his belt this year and sits fourth in points behind Luke, Taylor and Tasha. His No. 33 is solid and he’ll be right in the thick of things this weekend.
16 limiteds were on hand two weeks ago and even more could be in the field on Saturday as the first year Greenville-Pickens division has grown rapidly in just over a month’s time.
The always-exciting 4-cylinders, street stocks, pure stocks and renegades will also be on the schedule. Gates open at 4pm for spectators with the first racing green flag at 7pm.
