Jason Myers of Walnut Cove had almost the perfect end to his 2015 season at Bowman Gray Stadium. Almost.
Myers qualified on the pole for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series and led the way to win the Carolina Farm Credit 150 on Saturday. When season-ending awards were tallied, Myers had the fastest lap of the season, the most poles, the most wins, the most laps led, and the most positions gained.
But the big one, the 2015 season championship, belonged to Tim Brown of Tobaccoville – who took his record 10th Modified Series title.
“If I can sit on the pole, lead every lap, and win the race – he can have that championship. Man, that’s just paper,” said Jason Myers. “I ran hard all night. I knew the car would be good.”
Qualifying second-fastest and starting on the outside front row beside Jason was brother Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. For seven double-file restarts, Burt pulled up to the outside to challenge for the lead. Jason Myers sweated it every time but still held strong.
“Burt’s handling those restarts. He’s tough. I’m just fortunate we could get that thing pointed and go every time,” said Jason Myers, who also defended his lead against Dean Ward of Winston-Salem and Lee Jeffreys of Winston-Salem.
Burt Myers was pushing hard to pass Jason, not only to grab the checkered but also to potentially take the championship. Burt entered the final event ranked second in the points – having to finish only five positions ahead of points leader Tim Brown to win the crown.
Brown seemed to be stuck in mid-pack, flirting with an upset as he often fell five positions behind Burt Myers. In the later stages of the race, though, Brown started to make his way up through the field.
Then disaster struck for Burt Myers with less than 10 laps to go. He encountered some fuel issues and had to pit, falling off the lead lap and only salvaging a 14th place finish. Brown finished fifth, locking up his 10th championship.
“Our car was great tonight, but tonight I wasn’t worried about winning. I just wanted to win number 10, and we did it,” said Brown. “I love this place. I put my heart and soul into it, and I’m just blessed to have 10 championships.”
In the Farm Bureau Insurance Sportsman Series, John Holleman of Winston-Salem muscled past Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem to grab the win. Zack Clifton of Walkertown brought home the championship – his first Sportsman title.
Blake Shupe of Mount Airy claimed the victory in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, with Derrick Rice of Kernersville taking the series title.
And a nail-biter ending in the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series gave the checkered flag and the championship to Chuck Wall of Lexington.
