In a week that saw him claim the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series title and a part-time ride in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for 2021, Josh Berry continued his momentum by easily claiming the pole for the Old North State Nationals at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
Berry is making his first start in the Solid Rock Carriers CARS LMSC Tour since the Race at Ace 125 back on June 6, where he was suspended by the series for one event after intentionally wrecking race leader Bobby McCarty in retaliation from an incident earlier that evening.
The 2017 CARS LMSC Tour champion gave his competitors a firm reminder of how efficient he is on track by rocketing to the pole on his first lap with a 19.762, which he followed up with an even quicker second lap that clocked in at 19.681.
Mike Looney will start on the outside of the front row while Layne Riggs, who entered the Old North State Nationals 15 points behind Jared Fryar in the standings, qualified third. Rounding out the Top 5 for Sunday’s feature were Deac McCaskill and Corey Heim, who is also chasing a title.
The remaining 27 drivers will battle for 23 spots in tomorrow’s 200-lap event through three heat races and one last chance qualifier. Among them is Fryar, who could only muster a time of 20.003 in qualifying that put him 15th on the board.
