SOUTH BOSTON, VA :: Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Virginia fended off a challenge from former NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Peyton Sellers of Ringgold, Virginia to win the CenturyLink NASCAR Late Model 100Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.
The win, which came by a margin of 1.876 seconds, was Anderson’s first NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division win at South Boston Speedway since the 2009 season.
Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Virginia out-battled four-time former NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Virginia in the closing laps to finish third, with Morris and Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
Anderson took the lead from pole winner Bowling on lap 21 and drove away to a big lead. He was leading Sellers by about two seconds when the race’s only caution flag flew on lap 67.
The South Boston, Virginia resident restarted on the outside on the ensuing double-file restart, with Sellers taking the inside. Anderson managed to forge a clear edge after three laps, and with no more caution flags to slow the race, was able to hold onto the top spot the rest of the way.
Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, North Carolina, Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Virginia, Brian Pembelton of Amelia, Virginia, Blake Stallings of Danville, Virginia and G.R. Waldrop of Moseley, Virginia rounded out the top 10 finishers in the 100-lap race.
Anderson averaged 76.172 mph in scoring his second career NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division win at his hometown track.
Throckmorton Wins First Career SBS Limited Sportsman Race
Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, Virginia had a big night in Saturday night’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.
Throckmorton started on the pole and fended off a late run from defending division champion Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Virginia to score a flag-to-flag victory and record his first career South Boston Speedway Limited Sportsman Division race win.
Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville, Virginia, J.D. Eversole of Richmond, Virginia and Daniel Moss of Danville, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.
Throckmorton held a good lead when the race’s lone caution flag flew on lap 33 as the result of a spin by Trey Crews of Halifax, Virginia in the second turn. He managed to forge ahead of Willis on the ensuing restart and hold on the rest of the way to win by a margin of .327-second.
