The weather has been warm this week and the racing action will be sizzling hot Saturday night when South Boston Speedway drops the green flag for the start of the Whelen Night NASCAR Late Model 100 program.
Six events are scheduled as part of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Father’s Day Weekend program. The first race of the night will get cranked up at 7 p.m.
To celebrate Father’s Day Weekend, South Boston Speedway officials have also declared this weekend’s event Dad’s Night Out. All fathers will be admitted for the reduced price of $5.
The featured attraction of the night will be a 100-lap event for the competitors in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division.
Other races scheduled as part of the Whelen Night NASCAR Late Model 100 program include 50-lap events for the competitors in the Limited Sportsman Division and the Modified Division. The drivers in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division will clash in twin races Saturday night and the Budweiser Hornets Division will also battle it out on the historic four-tenths mile asphalt oval.
After sitting in second place for much of the season in the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division standings, Matt Bowling has now surged into the lead position in the chase for the 2015 championship.
Bowling, a former NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car Division champion at America’s Hometown Track, has claimed one win this season and leads two-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Lee Pulliam by 17 points.
Pulliam has scored four victories this season at South Boston Speedway. Austin Thaxton is third in the Late Model Stock Car standings and is followed in the top five by Bobby McCarty in fourth and Juan Garcia in fifth.
In the Limited Sportsman Division, two-time defending champion Danny Willis Jr. has opened a 29-point lead over Trey Crews in his bid for a third consecutive division crown. Joey Throckmorton is third in the title chase and is only two points behind Crews.
Only 13 points separate the top three contenders in the Modified Division championship chase. Mike Rudy sits in first place. He owns a 12-point lead over Matt Slye, while Jimmy Humblet is third and only trails Slye by one point.
Greg Autry has muscled out to a 25-point lead over Stuart Crews in the battle for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division crown. D.J. Moser owns the third-place spot in the standings. He is only five points behind Crews.
Eric Winslow sits atop the standings in the Hornets Division. He is 10 points ahead of second-place Kenny Mills and 17 points ahead of third-place Kirstin Simmons.
Registration and pit gates will open Saturday at 2 p.m. with practice for all division scheduled from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:30 p.m.
Adult admission is $10. Children, ages six and under, will be admitted free with an adult.
