Asheboro, NC(October 23, 2012) – Garrett Campbell was fastest in practice at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, fourth fastest in qualifying and finished second in his heat race. The ingredients were in place for a solid finish until overheating problems took him out of contention in Sunday’s Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300.
Campbell appeared destined for a strong run on Sunday. Campbell staged a classic duel with eventual race winner Philip Morris through much of the fourth heat race. He started eighth in the 150 lap feature and worked his way up to third. On a lap 34 restart, the car directly ahead of Campbell missed a shift, causing Campbell to drive in to the back of him. The damage caused Campbell’s car to overheat, ending his day.
“This car was strong all weekend and it’s unfortunate we didn’t get the result we were looking for,” Campbell said. “We definitely had a car that could’ve won this race. The team gave me an awesome car and I had a chance to win, and I couldn’t ask for more. Luck just didn’t go our way.”
Campbell ran the fastest overall time on Saturday with a 20.260, just over four one-hundredths of a second faster than the 20.301 second lap clocked by the pole winner in qualifying.
