Charlotte, NC(March 9, 2011) — The winter months are hard for everybody. Weather extremes and fewer hours of daylight are just a few of the reasons people choose to stay inside at this time of year. For race fans and competitors winter can be downright excruciating. Not only is it cold outside, but there’s no racing to be found anywhere.
But, with Spring just a few days away, the smell of burning rubber and race fuel abounds as Pro All Star Series (PASS) South Super Late Model teams begin testing at short tracks throughout the Southeast. Teams will soon put together all the things they’ve learned during the off season when the 2011 PASS South season begins on March 11-12 with the Electric City 150 at the Anderson(SC) Motor Speedway.
PASS South has only raced at Anderson once and quite a bit has changed since back in 2007. PASS South has grown from its early days when people were not sure if Super Late Model racing was viable in the South anymore to one of the premier short track racing divisions in the country. Anderson Motor Speedway has seen a similar transition. After nearly 50 years in operation, time had begun to take its toll on the 3/8 mile track that was paved back in 1986. Now under the operation of promoter Sylvia Porter, Anderson Motor Speedway has seen numerous upgrades to the track and facility and has become a premier destination for drivers and fans alike.
This year’s Electric City 150 promises to be a “can’t miss” event for race fans hungry to thaw out from the Winter cold. 2010 PASS South Champion Preston Peltier and runner-up Ryan Blaney have tested extensively during the off season and would love to kick off the new season with a win in the season opener. Georgia’s Justin Wakefield struggled through a disappointing season last year, but a win in the prestigious World Crown 300 coupled with a new car has driver #98 excited about his chances at Anderson.
Veterans Jay Fogleman and Heath Hindman are both looking to start the season off strong and end winless streaks, while Jimmy Weller and Jody Lavender look to capitalize on great late-season efforts that ended their 2010 campaigns. South Carolina will also be well represented by home state drivers Randy Gentry and PASS South rookie Gus Dean. Add to that an exciting list of newcomers and veterans and the Electric City 150 has all the makings for a great start to the season.
In addition to the PASS South Super Late Models competing in the Electric City 150, Anderson Motor Speedway will have a host of other racing divisions to entertain race fans. Like at many PASS South events this season, the new CCS Late Model Sportsman division will be in action as well as the Legends and Bandoleros. Local race fans will also get to see their hometown heroes in action with main events for the Front Wheel Drives and Renegades.
The weekend will kick off on Friday, March 11 with rotating practice for all divisions from 3-7:30 PM. On Saturday, March12, rotating practice for all divisions will start at 11 AM. PASS South qualifying will begin at 4 PM, with racing slated to start at 6 PM. Anderson Motor Speedway is located just off Interstate 85 at 313 Irby Road in Williamston, SC. And, don’t forget the 2011 Pro All Stars Series South season continues on March 26 with the six edition of the South Carolina Clash at the Dillon (SC) Motor Speedway and April 7-9 with THE RACE, 300 laps under the lights paying $75,000 to win at the Historic North Wilkesboro (NC) Speedway.
