Southside Speedway has canceled its 2020 season due to the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and a recent announcement by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam that the state would remain under Phase 2 restrictions longer than expected.
The track sent out the following statement, announcing the cancelation of the 2020 season:
Beginning on March 24, race tracks were considered “non-essential places of business,” and were required to close due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Over the past three months and through the phased reopening of Virginia, Southside Speedway has waited patiently for a date that would allow our racers and fans to return to the track.
With the recent announcement by the Governor that Phase 2 will extend longer due to a nationwide increase in coronavirus cases, and with the uncertainty of the timing and allowances for future phases, the management team at Southside Speedway has made the extremely difficult decision to close the race track to all racing for 2020.
It is with heavy hearts that we make this announcement, knowing the impact on race teams and race fans throughout Central Virginia. Please remember, as the “Toughest Short Track in the South,” Southside Speedway will continue to be your local race track for years to come and we look forward to having you all back healthy and happy in 2021.
