Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, NC has been hosting races since 1963 but in 2020 it will do so for the first time under NASCAR sanctioning. 57 seasons have passed and for the 58th drivers will be able to compete for state and national points under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series banner.

Track promoter Charlie Hansen is excited about the possibilities that being NASCAR sanctioned brings for the central North Carolina facility.

“It’s taken 58 seasons but here we are going NASCAR sanctioned for the first time,” Hansen told RACE22. “With the landscape of racing in our region and working together closely with our sister track, Southern National, it should be a win-win for our drivers and fans. We could see a lot of guys who race for North Carolina State and National points come to Wake County Speedway to compete for the first time and on a regular basis.”

Wake County will be one of only three NASCAR sanctioned Friday night tracks in this region joining Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC and Kingsport Speedway in Kingsport, TN as the only track competing with perimeter Late Model Stock Cars as their Division 1 for NASCAR points.

In addition to adding NASCAR sanctioning, Hansen has expanded the typical 10 event schedule for Wake County Speedway to include a couple more races. This move will give additional points-paying dates for points chasers in the 2020 season.

“We feel that between our schedule and the schedule at Southern National Motorsports Park, drivers in this area can make a run at the North Carolina State Championship and the National Championship. We just need a few more cars than we averaged last season and we’ll be at maximum points and I think this move will put us there.”

Wake County Speedway’s NASCAR points season will kick-off on April 10th with a 60-lap race for the Late Models on the schedule. The season will culminate on September 18th with twin Late Model features on the final weekend for NASCAR state and national points.
