East Carolina Motor Speedway has canceled their event set for this Saturday, September 7th due to the rains and winds coming in from Hurricane Dorian.
The race will be made up on Sunday, September 15th, which is the final day of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National points. The event could become a big player in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National championship should the points for the three Late Model Stock Car drivers be close on the final weekend.
The “big three” as they have become known this season, will not compete against each other this weekend with all three drivers expected to compete at their home tracks. Peyton Sellers, who should be third in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National points this week, will compete in twins at South Boston Speedway as he tries to claim another track championship.
Philip Morris will likely be back at Dominion Raceway, where he’s competed for much of the second half of the season. Morris hasn’t returned to South Boston Speedway since his crew chief Forrest Reynolds was suspended but once for the $10,000 to win race in June where he ended up crashed. Mike Looney is headed home to be crowned Motor Mile Speedway champion for the first time in his career. Morris isn’t expected to travel there either as he’s been unable to beat Looney in the last four races on the 4/10 mile track.
They could all be back together racing one another again after this weekend depending on how the points shake out. All three have fallen behind Midwest drivers Nick Panitzke and Jacob Goede, who should still sit one and two in the points once they’re updated. Sellers, Morris and Looney will have a few choices for the final Saturday night with Langley Speedway, Southern National Motorsports Park and Myrtle Beach Speedway all running twin races. The “big three” is expected to descend upon Langley Speedway as neither of the three has had much success at Southern National this season or Myrtle Beach traditionally.
The date will also play into the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina State Championship as Bradley McCaskill continues to close in on leader Thomas Beane. McCaskill started the season racing on the CARS Tour before moving to the NWAAS sanctioned tracks in an effort to make a run at the North Carolina State title.
The National points nor the state points have been updated this week but McCaskill had closed last week to within 44 points. McCaskill finished second and third over the weekend in twins at Southern National Motorsports Park while Beane finished 16th in a single feature. McCaskill will likely have full fields next weekend in twins at Southern National where he’s won several times this season already.
He will also likely head to East Carolina Motor Speedway, where his team was planning to compete this weekend. Depending on how close the points are and where things will shake out he could very well be joined by the “big three” as they will likely take advantage of any and all dates possible. Especially if the three are at Langley Speedway on Saturday night and can make the short trip to East Carolina on Sunday.
The devastating Hurricane is bad news for everyone in its path but it might have helped create another path for Sellers, Morris or Looney to win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Championship.
