The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National points standings seem to take many twists and turns each week. After Philip Morris closed the gap on point leader Peyton Sellers last week, Sellers gained a few back this week.
While those two are busy out front battling one another for points, Mike Looney has begun closing in on the lead duo after surging from 10th at the beginning of the month of June to now sit third in the standings just 76 points out from the lead. Looney sits just 54 points behind Morris for second in the standings as of this week as well.
Looney according to our calculations was shorted at least eight points this week after sweeping twin NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car races with full car count (16) at Motor Mile Speedway and starting from 10th in both races to do so. His total should be 442 instead of the 434 he’s showing on the NASCAR Home Tracks website currently.
Looney wasn’t alone in sweeping twin races over the weekend. Morris swept twins at Dominion Raceway starting fifth and sixth in the two features with more than full car count. Sellers also swept twin races at South Boston Speedway but had just a 14-car field, two short of full car count. Sellers started shotgun on the field in the first race and 10th in the second race giving him maximum passing points for the two races and gaining the 8 points he lost (two per car, per race) that not having a full field cost him.
By virtue of the full field and maximum passing points for Looney, he scored eight more points than Sellers with Morris outscoring Sellers for the weekend by four points as well. Despite gaining points on the weekend versus Sellers, Morris actually lost ground to Sellers because they’ve both reached their maximum counted 18 races.
At this point, the two are simply replacing their worst finishes and Morris didn’t have as much to gain on the weekend as Sellers did. Looney now also has reached the maximum counted 18 races and with this weekend’s Hampton Heat 200 will only replace his worst finishes of the season to date.
Mid-west racers Jacob Goede and rookie Zach Telford sit fourth and fifth in the standings after this weeks update. Goede appears to be the driver most likely to make a run at the top three drivers as he has only 15 starts counted so far. Keith Rocco, Todd Owen, Nick Sanchez, Jeff Oakley, and Thomas Beane complete the current top ten in points.
In the state battles, Beane continues to lead the North Carolina state points over his championship rival at Hickory Motor Speedway, Chris Hudspeth. Those two lead a trio of Bowman Gray Stadium drivers including new winner Jonathan “JonBoy” Brown, Burt Myers and Tim Brown.
In South Carolina, the five Myrtle Beach Speedway regulars still hold tight to the top five positions with Sam Yarbrough and Justin Milliken leading Tommy Lemons, Jr., Brian Vause, and Nick Sanchez. Myrtle Beach Speedway returns to action this weekend.
In Virginia, Sellers leads Morris by 12 points and Looney by 54 points. Jeff Oakley and Lee Pulliam complete the top five. Only one track in Virginia competes with their top NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division, that being Langley Speedway, who hosts the second leg of the Virginia Triple Crown Series with the Hampton Heat 200.
The Tennessee battle, which only takes place at the one-single sanctioned track at Kingsport Speedway, has track points leader Nik Williams by 24 points over Zeke Shell. Joey Trent, Wayne Hale, and Derek Lane complete the top five. Kingsport will be back in action Friday night.
Many points contenders will be in action this weekend including leader Sellers and third place Looney, who will both compete in the Hampton Heat at Langley Speedway on Saturday. One driver who won’t be in action this weekend is Philip Morris, who withdrew from the Hampton Heat. It could be another big swing in points for Sellers or Looney with Morris on the sidelines at a pivotal point in the season.
